Good news is I have just upgraded my clients without issues. Bad news is I am going to have to trash mine totally and start again. I may even and relunctantly put on Vista so I can groan more on here.

However, I would suggest that you unload any programs like Virus checkers before the installation of the downloaded file which should be appearing as a little gold shield on near your clock now.

I know - I know but think of poor old Bill Gates trying to earn an honest living and if someone doesn't buy Vista to start the ball rolling, what will happen to the poor man. I dread to think. Sad

Mine ain't broke so I don't fancy trying to fix it Laughing. Does SPIII add anything useful, or is it just bloatware to slow my laptop down? I'd rather work toward my long term aim of moving to Linux.

Hi Laughing
I read that there was a problem with XP SPIII in that it conflicts with one of Microsoft's on addon!! See Computer Shopper

Seems to have sorted itself out. I was checking a few things and at some point it has fully installed 3 and the only problem I have is that I have to use the boot menu and select a drive otherwise all I get for my money is a flashing cursor. I cannot believe this has anything to do with XP Svc 3 but must be coincidental.

Apparently with 3 it is 10% faster than Vista. It always seemed to me to be 10% faster running XP SVC 2.

Why have you any particular reason or is it just a standard precaution you recommend. Frank

It is good practice in my view because it is impossible for microsoft to allow for every program that may be running although I suspect it is capable of closing down most itself. But I also reset IE7 to defaults too just in case I have something lurking in addons or hooks.

However, I wouldn't tear your hair out over it as I seemed to arrive at a pretty disasterous situation having done all that but 3 did sort itself out with no intervention for me albeit several reboots.

Some antivirus can give "false positives" when scanning installation files. This can cause corruption in some files during installation. It mainly happens when installing drivers but can, in theory, cause problems with any installation.

We had a terrible fight last night.....my wife asked me what was on the TV and I said "dust".

I treat every day as if it was my last. One day i will be right.
