Many people seem to struggle to cope with fixed speed limits, variable ones would really upset things.

Bandaid: Yes, of course you can have variable speed limits but those who disregard the current limits (for what ever reason) will disregard these as well.

Its back to my original reply - its the attitude to breaking speed limits that needs to change.

Fair enough, although I disagree with the sentiment (unsurprisingly).

Bandaid: I briefly thought we had FULL agreement: I misread your typo "moroized" as morons and thought that's exactly the solution remove ALL THE MORONS FROM THE ROAD.

he only debate then would be where does one draw the moron line Laughing

Unfortunately 40 years ago cars were more sturdy...

I do thoroughly agree that some drivers are more capable at assessing the risks of driving and that some have received training (not necessarily driver training) which would make them much safer drivers. Yes Ido agree that proper observation is also a key factor. The benefit of good observation was "driven into me" by the Police Instructor and has saved me from numerous accidents - not all little old ladies either.

Yes, I understand that the law, in general, is a jack hammer to crack a nut and that though we may find it inconvenient, tailoring the law to each individual would be unworkable.

We unfortunately have a saying "There should be a law against it...". Those who use that phrase usually don't understand the consequences of enacting a law, any law i.e. most laws are "one size fits all" whether we like it or not.

[way off topic]
I am of the opinion, and this is my opinion, that there are way too many laws which have been enacted because someone has said "There should be a law against it..." without understanding the consequences and that politicians, who should know better, have followed the will of the lobbyist rather than common sense. Smile
[/way off topic]

But getting back to the subject. The problem with becoming indignant at a post, any post, is that you could become indignant about most posts. For example those of us who have RV's are bigger polluters because we use more hydrocarbons. Should we be indignant when they post that they only "do" between 7 and 8 mpg? OK they are not breaking any enacted laws but they are, nontheless, causing proportionately more damage to the planet, nature and its inhabitants...

Surely we should keep our indignation to ourselves but report what we may perceive as offensive posts to the Moderators?

I think you may find that those comments were somewhat "tongue in cheek" Smile

Fair do's to you. Same as me then.

The reason I ask is that my retired parents, and those of the sameish age I know, all berate agressive fast driving, as is their right. However the same people I seem to remember were extremely agressive and impatient when they had deadline and appointments to meet and associated stress.

To widen the point, I live in an area with a lot of elderly drivers who potter about without a clue who's aroud them.

Personally, I would like to see all over 70's have to be periodiacally tested for eyesight, a simple reation time test and a simple confusion test.

Provided they are fit to drive, they can drive as slowly as they like as far as I'm concerned. However a little courtesy in allowing people to pass, by everyone, would help those who don't have the time to 'potter'.

I have to admit to being one of those "slow coach drivers" when driving my gas guzzling RV.

On B/C roads I rarely exceed 35mph in the derestricted areas and usually travel at 20-25mph in the 30mph zones

On A roads I'll usually travel at between 40-45mph in the derestricted zones and 20-25mph in the 30mph zones

On motorways and most dual carriageways ooh it's 50mph!

I also have a motorbike and ride at the appropriate speed for the prevailing road conditions...
