We have had a problem today, we tried to level the van up to fill her up as we are off tomorrow, and have found that we haven't been able to get the van to hold on the handbrake...which is of course not good.... seems weird... Duncan gets it to stop at the top of the levellers as usual, but has to hold it on the footbrake to stop it, and then pulls up the hardbrake as high as he can, and then slowly lets his foot off the brake....and it slides down making horrible noise....

Any thoughts apart from the handbrake needs tightening....and this is brand new remember.

Interested to know if others with the 160 maxi chassis have a problem

Carol

Carol

We had exactly the same issue early on where the handbrake would not hold on a steep T junction. Had to ride the clutch but no judder at least. Smile

We had it adjusted when the van went in for its recalls free of charge and it is now 3 or 4 clicks as it should be and holds well,

Ed

Hi Carol

It may be only that the brake linings have not yet bedded in properly - it can take a while. Until that happens they will not be making maximum contact with the drums.

The handbrake adjustment on our truck is extremely easy to fix. Just crawl under the truck and the adjuster is obvious - take up the slack until the handbrake lever offers definite resistance after 3 or 4 clicks - as Ed just mentioned.

I expect yours will be the same - just a locknut and and adjusting nut on a long threaded rod. Can't get it wrong - so long as you re-tighten the locknut when you have finished! Very Happy Very Happy

(I use the term "you" very loosely here. I suspect it will be Himself who gets shoved under the van, poor devil! Bloody women!! Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy )

Stick it in 'Park' it its an auto or in first gear for the time being until you get it sorted.

If its making a horrible noise, dont use the handbrake.

I don't often disagree with Peter, and do so now with trepidation, but it depends on when the horrible noise occurs. (IMHAAO - In my humble and amateur opinion.)

If there is no unusual noise during normal use of the brakes, that would indicate nothing wrong with the rear drum assembly.

On the other hand, when creeping forward off the ramps, the brakes will be likely to slip a tiny bit at a time, and each time they let go then grab again there will be a bang. This will happen very rapidly and will probably sound like a heavily creaking door being opened very slowly - or someone trying to prise my wallet open!

This does not indicated a mechanical problem, other than lack of adjustment, as it happens all the time to me when I simply haven't pulled the handbrake on hard enough (permanently weak wrist from when I broke it).

Peter is the pro however, so I shall stand back and wait to be called names. If he thinks I may be correct however, that's a load off your mind for your imminent holiday.

Cheers

Hi Carol,

I have attached the adjustment instructions for the handbrake from the Fiat workshop CD.
It is headed 2.2 - but its the same as the 160.
As the hanbrake consists of "brake shoes" inside the rear discs - adjustment is not a five minute job - adjusting the cable will not adjust the rear shoes.

Regards

We had to have ours adjusted as well. Would not hold when we first had it - been fine ever since.

Agreed Dave, obviously - and made a bit more awkward on something the size of a M/H.

Would it not be worth checking first if the cable adjuster simply needs a tweak??

There will be a good(ish) indication by the position of the quadrant when the brake is in the on position, wouldn't you think? My previous van had a naff handbrake when I got it, but that's all the problem was.

Cheers

Thanks for help and advice folks, hopefully it will just need this adjustment. We are calling in at Chelston's anyway as they are going to see if we can fit a wheel carrier beneath the van..... so we can get this done then, I just hope that we don't need levellers at MTH or Vanbitz...otherwise we will cope...

Cheers
Carol

PS - Dave you were of course correct, himself would be the one to crawl under, me I would look and not even know what I was looking at. I can drive it, park it, level it, empty the loo (my job anyway) and I can check water and oil levels, I reckon that is all I need to know - oh yes and the breakdown number for anything else. Of forgot, I know where the living water goes in and the liquid gold diesel goes too....
