Thanks guys & gals . . guess its going to be the Panasonic SD255 [cheapest I can find is Tesco's at £96 [other on-line shops are slightly cheaper but are charging up to £10 delivery]
One last question, one of our sons is coeliac & has to have a gluten free diet, anyone made alternative bread made with rice flour or other stuff ?

"If we ever get a failure it's because the yeast has gone stale."

That's also been my ONLY cause of "bread failure" in years of using our SD253.

This topic will probably result in me eating revolting bread for the next couple of days Sad. I've just discovered it must be months since I last used my bread machine, and the flour is months past its use by date. I usually use half white, half wholemeal, but I've only got wholemeal, so it will probably turn out as a tooth breaking inedible lump Sad. If you're at Newbury tomorrow and need levelling blocks, let me know Laughing

I can go along with the Panasonic recommendation

Do not under any circumstances buy a cheap bread maker (been there done that)

Our Panasonic has lasted 4 years so far, and its on 3-4 times a week, we use hovis dried yeast, and Morrisons value flour (which suprisingly enough gives better results than the more expensive hovis flour)

I often make cakes in the breadmaker. My youngest grand-daughter enjoys chocolate cake, one problem, I never seem to get all the chocolate mixed in. There is usually a thin line of chocolate/butter mix near the bottom, any hints?

I've got a Morphy Richards Fastbake
Had it a couple of years now and use it virtually every day as I cannot eat much " cotton wool" bread ( everyday sliced bread) as it gives me the trots!
As mentioned previously the only time it has produced a duff loaf was when the yeast used was out of date.
Mine also has a programme for making jam although I have never tried it.

When I set mine to cook the bread overnight ( I set it to be ready about 10min before our alarm went off) the whole household was awake early because of the lovely smell wafting through the house.
By the time the loaf was cooked the entire family were lined up in the Kitchen like a row of vultures waiting for it to come out of the pan!

Not sure about their price Vic, but it's worth mentioning that Lakeland Plastics after sales support is second to none.

They will replace or refund for whatever reason, and without questioning you for hours to try and shift the blame.

We always buy from them if we can, even if it's a couple of quid dearer.

Cheers
