I see that PANDALF is looking to see if anyone else is going to Le Mans this year and is suggesting a 'a sort of mini-MHF directory of attendees' so members can find one another. I have never seen on these forums anyone mention using PMR446 radios for communicating/finding fellow MHF members while on sites or on the road. Better quality ones now come with 8km range which is quite useful. PMR446 two way radios come with 8 basic channels while on the better models each channel is subdivided by 38 CTCSS tones (sub-channels) giving 304 virtual channels.
As no one has yet suggested a common channel for us members of MHF let me suggest channel 6, sub/channel 11 ( it's the month and day of one of the kids birthday).
SO LETS START A MHF MEMBERS CHANNEL FOR USERS OF PMR446 ON CHANNEL 6 CTCSS 11.
What d'ya think

Sounds like a good idea.

I've had a pair Motorola Talkabout 250 units for a few years these have 14 channels and 38 sub channels. Seem Ok talking to each other, but have not been able to discover frequencies where we can talk to people using different units.

Anyone have any info

Andrew

Hiya

Its already been decided ages ago! The official MHF channel is 3, with no CTCSS as not everyones radio's has that facility.

AndroidGB - if they are not marked PMR446 then strictly speaking they are not legal for use in UK/€U.

Highly unlikely that you would be prosecuted but as with all things illegal, you never know - one day!

Just your luck if you happened to be chatting and giving your exact position on what just happens to be someones Special Forces covert frequency.
"What is that helicopter doing hovering overhead?"
"Why are those camouflaged, heavily armed guys jumping out of it?"
"Why are they running towards our 'van?"
"And blowing it up?"

Here's some info lifted from

What are the PMR446 channel frequencies?
The 8 PMR446 channels use the following frequencies (in MHz):

1. 446.00625
2. 446.01875
3. 446.03125
4. 446.04375
5. 446.05625
6. 446.06875
7. 446.08125
8. 446.09375

What are the American FRS / GMRS frequencies?
FRS has 14 channels, numbered 1-14 below. GMRS uses the same channels as FRS 1-7, and then adds a further 7 channels numbered 15-22 below. There are many "combination" FRS/GMRS walkie-talkies on the market that have all 22 of the channels listed below.

1. 462.5625
2. 462.5875
3. 462.6125
4. 462.6375
5. 462.6625
6. 462.6875
7. 462.7125
8. 467.5625
9. 467.5875
10. 467.6125
11. 467.6375
12. 467.6625
13. 467.6875
14. 467.7125
15. 462.550
16. 462.575
17. 462.600
18. 462.625
19. 462.650
20. 462.675
21. 462.700
22. 462.725

If I used American FRS / GMRS radios in the UK, who might I interfere with?
In many cases, given the short range of walkie-talkies, you may not interfere with anyone. But: the 462MHz FRS channels 1-7 are used for some emergency service radios, and interefering with these is very illegal and potentially dangerous.

The higher FRS / GMRS channels on 467MHz are used by licensed private users such as TV outside broadcasts, special event organisers etc. They will have paid for the right to use those channels and could complain if they get interference.

Blimey that's what caused it!

Was near Hereford last year and was talking to my mate on the 2 way radio saying we needed to find a campsite pretty quickly or the Thetford would explode. Next minute a Land Rover Discovery screams up out jumps four guys in black overalls and destroyed my cassette in a controlled explosion

Andrew Very Happy

Oops, just attached my further contribution to Snelly's original thread last year, so here it is again for this thread.
Hi Shane, had forgotten about posts early last year, just followed your link and see that the discussion fizzled out March '07. I see also that only 28 members voted in the poll. Channel 3 is fine but a CTCSS (sub-channel) would help to keep us away from others communications, Most sets should now have this facility, it's a legal requirement here in Ireland and is probably so in the rest of the EU. Maybe I'm flogging a dead horse but perhaps if a selected channel/sub-channel was given a permanent display on the home page it might lead to a significant community of users developing over time and increase the chance of meeting up with fellow MHF'rs when touring or at rallies and meets.
We have a pair Aldi 8km units which sit in a charge/base charging from a cigar lighter voltage regulator set to the specified input voltage.
