OK - so I've amazed myself by using two technical terms just in the title but I have a question. The BBC has now launched its Freesat system which, if I read all the publicity right, is basically the Freeview channels but delivered by satellite with the bonus of getting some chanels in HD if you buy a more expensive satellite box. So far, so good - here's the question:-
What's the "footprint" of this service. Will I be able to get Freesat halfway down France or is it limited to the UK? I've got a free to air satellite box in the van at the moment which doesn't get any UK channels (with the exception of Sky News) outside the UK. Will the new service work with this box (a Lidl's special) or will I need a new box?
Ooops - that's 2 questions. Sorry

freesat uses the free to air channels that are transmitted by the Astra 2 satellite. In other words the same satellite as SKY. So in theory, wherever you can get SKY channels then you should get freesat. The service is aimed specifically at the UK and therefore freesat make no excuses if you have difficulty receiving outside the UK.
The major benefit of freesat is the availability later of HD content, BBC HD is currently there but is only preview until the evening, a 7 day EPG and the availability of a PVR. The HD and PVR are the most significant gains over SKY plus the fact that you do not need a viewing card or phone connection.

This will give you three different foot prints and also tell you which programs are broadcast on which beam.

Would a bigger dish help? I'd like to listen to Radio 4 when I Am in the Poitou Charente area. Is size important? (When it comes to dishes, that is!)
Well a long wave radio will do that
If you can't receive it on what you use currently, perhaps you are near a noise source or your antenna could be better.

Using a television receiver to listen to the radio is very much using a sledge hammer to crack a nut. As Dave has said a good radio would work without killing your battery or causing image retention issues on your screen.

Just seen a list of channels received by Freesat. It doesn't get all the freeview channels!
