"how to arrange export plates and the various paperwork"
It's a proper rigmarole. I was fortunate to have the bloke from the German dealer take me along to the various offices you have to visit to complete the forms and pay fees. It took me the best part of a morning. I would say that you need to get the private seller to come with you.
You can get export plates and 3P insurance for up to 28 days - that gives you a margin in case of problems with DVLA when you get back.

Why not go the other way and conatct the below. I do not have any association with this company, other than total satisfaction.
They imprt 2nd hand pre owned Hymers and have a fair range to choose from. They will have done all the leg work. Good luck

we bought ours in berlin , travelled all the train so , great too ! . can i tell you , please make sure the person you buy from can speak english , he will have to bring you to the office of transport , we had our. insurance 70 euros . they supply a plate for export , and as said here 22-28 days to travel home , make sure it has a current t,u,v, . you will save a load of cash , except now with the euro almost upon the pound does it make sense !!. try searching dhd24 , this is a german search engine this will find what ever for you . when you make payment make sure it is bank transfer , not cash !!
good luck take care , denton.

Hi Isabel,
getting an export number plate in Germany is in fact quite easy. Provided that you try it during normal working hours (Monday to Friday between 08:00 and 17:00, local exceptions may apply):
You drive with the vehicle and all the original papers to the nearest vehicle registration office ("Kraftfahrzeug-Zulassungsstelle", abbrev. "Kfz-Zulassungsstelle"). If the seller is legal owner of the vehicle he must know where this office is because he must have registered the vehicle there. (If he is polite he will accompany you.) At the office you usually pull a number for the waiting queue (better not try Monday morning), then when it is your turn tell the clerk that you want an "Ausfuhrkennzeichen". You then will have to sign some forms, pay some fees, the clerk will walk out and personally check the VIN, then you will receive the export papers.
There is always a bunch of numberplate printers around such an office waiting for your cash, so take the papers and go to one of them. He will not only make the plates, but also sell you an export insurance (liability only), valid for the same time as the number plates. With the new plates and the insurance documents you walk back to the registration office, there they will put an official seal on the plates (they are not valid without it), and that's it. Attach the plates to the van, and drive off.
But a word of warning: Be very careful with Ebay deals! Usually, second hand motorhomes sell quite well in Germany, even without Ebay, and there are specialised platforms like

. Fact is that there are many dodgy offers around, so be always prepared to walk away from a deal if something seems fishy.
Best Regards and good luck,
Gerhard
