Thought I would do the decent thing and say Hi.

Bought a Hymer 660S on ebay from Germany early April. Flew over, drove to Amsterdam and camped for a few nights before a stormy trip back to Blighty. A final and thirsty (fuel) drive to Aberdeen the next day. An adventure for sure, especially when trying to remember O-grade German, not too happy about the flying thing, and never driven a motorhome or been on a Ferry. Beats all adventures to date.

Why?

Change of life style. Fed up with the commute, cost of living and having no time for me. I'm planning to tour yes, of course, but sadly, I still need to work. So, I plan to live in it, camp wild and live off the fat of the land during the week locally to my work, and tour with the other half over the weekends. Been in Scotland for 30 years, yet not seen probably a third.

I'm a Design Engineer in Oil & Gas. So if you need a down hole drilling tool, I probably could help!

Loved camping, so I see this as just another extension.

Haven't seen a lot of talk about running a MH on biofuels and veggie oil Shocked and although I make the bio stuff for my car, I thought it would cramp my style in the MH and so run that off used cooking oil; done 300 miles so far Very Happy Let me know if you want to know more!

Hi Squeak,

Welcome to MHF. I know what you mean about living it, and not seeing it. Britain has so many sights to see and wonderful places to visit. It's just a shame about our unpredictable weather. Wink
Are you planning any long trips in the Hymer?
And please do tell us more about your "chip van". Wink
Do you have to use any special equipment to use the old oil?

Jock.

Hi there Squeak from a neighbour in Newmachar. You are certainly in the right part of the country with a MH, we have only been back home for 3/4 years after nearly 40 years down South (Royal Navy) and it's amazing the places that we are still discovering on our own doorstep.

Best things ever invented are the Aberdeenshire municiple sites -

- they are great and having not long passed the magic 60, the costs are even better. We are aiming for Alford this week-end, bank holiday and it only costs £8.50 for a serviced pitch.

Sorry you can't afford to retire, we can't either, but there!!!!

Regards, Roger

Welcome Squeak, and hello from "ben the road" at Huntly.

Like you we went to Germany for the present Hymer, Hamburg in our case, back in November. The exchange rate had just begun to drop, we got €1.4/£, at today's rate of around €1.2 it would have cost us about £2500 more. Good luck, not good planning!

Was your eBay purchase a private deal or through a dealer? We found ours through Mobile.de and dealt with a company called Storbeck Caravaning who were excellent. This was our first go at importing in about 35 years of motorhoming and it all went very smoothly, we'd definately do it again, although the pound will need to strengthen a bit first.
Looks like it will be holidays in Scotland this year, providing we can afford the diesel. Your chip pan option sounds interesting, I'm sure others will be asking for the recipe.

Enjoy!

Welcome Squeak.

We have had a few mh's from Germany, back when you got more for your pound. We used a bloke to source and bring them back for us. We just had to go pick it up from his house. Lazy, but convenient for us as we have little spare time.
