Hi Lady,
If you do a lot of moving then I recon an inverter and charge them on the move. but if you do a lot of stationary wild camping then think about solar panels plus an inverter.
See my comments in "Generators, which one"

Inverting to 240V just to transform down to 24V seems a bit inefficient.
There are some 12 to 24v dc dc converters rated at 120W. i am just buying one on ebay to power my laptop. |

Hi Jaqui and john,
I'd agree with doug, see also my comments on 'generators, which one'.
Its not my intention to offend, it's just that my heart sinks whenever someone close to me (or not so close) gets the dreaded 'genny' out.

LadyJ,
OK. The bike webpage suggests the battery is a lead-acid weighing 8kg. I guess that's around a 10-12 Ah capacity at 24V. The charger is 24V 1.6A max, and the website suggests 8-10 hours charge, which tallies with the estimated capacity. You suggest they charge in 4-5 hours, probably due to you not fully discharging them and the charger having a "fully charged" indicator.
Going via a cheap 150W inverter, such as:

to charge both bikes' batteries you will consume around 30Ah capacity from your 2 leisure batteries, each being at least 80Ah capacity but you typically can only draw around half that before they become unuseable. If the charger goes at full whack for as long as 10hours (that's unlikely but worst case) you can double this consumption.
I'd do that - buy a cheap 100W or 150W inverter - and see how you get on. But you won't be able to do this for days on the trot away from mains power without the alternator putting a fair chunk back on the move. Your solar panel is helping, but not totally replenishing what you take out.
I'd avoid a DC-DC converter as the mains charger's voltage will be carefully adjusted to charge, but not overcharge, your sealed lead acid battery.
And as to a genny for this job - I'd respectfully suggest you take it with you by selling the electric bikes and putting it onboard - as a lightweight scooter/ moped! I am currently mulling a compact one for storage, weighs only 73kg, goes at 65mph and has a comfy pillion seat. And it costs less than the folding pushbike I have.
