Having just struggled with the latest set of obstacles thrown my way by Mr Gates, successfully in the end, I thought I woiuld document the issues in case they help others.

My system is set for automatic updates, and yesterday it decided to update Vista by adding Service Pack 1.

This failed with an error message. It, and I tried several times, and it failed every time.

After doing some internet research, I stumbled across the reason.
My system (an Acer Aspre 5920G) has a feature called Turbodrive. This is an Intel feature, designed to improve performance, and could be fitted to other makes (eg I think Dell use it on some systems). Turbodrive only works with Vista, so is only on quite new systems.

Before applying SP1, turbodrive has to be switched off. This is done using the Intel Turbo Memory console, found in "all programs".

Apply SP1, and afterwards switch Turbodrive back on, and all is well.

It would have been nice if Visat had told me this as part of the SP1 upgrade instructions, but instead it just failed with an unhelpful error message. Its good of Mr Gates to keep us on our toes like this.

SP1 has made no noticeable change to the system, microsoft say it improves stability and security.

Good luck.

Good old MS-another triumph.

I believe my Vista Ultimate was updated the other day.

Didn't have your problems but what really p**ses me off is the way that the Automatic Update decided to reboot when I was online and in the middle of something.

This after I had declined to reboot immediately-about ten minutes later off it went without any further warning.

Gnash.

I think Microsoft still has a bit to learn!

VISTA is very slick, but under the skin there are too many of these issues.
I haved also discovered another "feature".
I generally use Hibernate to shut down, as it is much quicker to reboot. Recently my Hibernate menu item disappeared.

After much research, I discovered that if you run Disc Clean Up, the Hibernate item is deleted from the menus.

The only way to get it back is to run a power configuration tool - FROM THE DOS PROMPT!!! Unbelieveable with an allegedly sophisticated and easy to use system such as Vista.

Oh, and I can no longer fly my planes. My Joystick (a Microsoft sidewinder) works with Vista, Flight Sim 2000 works with Vista, but the 3 together do not work - they did with XP. If anyone has any magic answers I'd be grateful! (Yes I know its sad flying planes on a computer at my age but I enjoy it!)
