Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall of river cottage and TV fame is trying to get Tescos to take chicken welfare seriously and intends to bring it up at the AGM. Tesco has demanded that Hugh pay more than £86,000 for putting his concerns about chicken welfare to its shareholders. He has put 30k of his own money in the 'pot' but is inviting others to contribute via donations or bids for auction items see link.

But if you want to do anything you have to do it TODAY as the money/pledges have to be in by Wednesday.l

You do realise that if this happens then the price of chickens will leap alarmingly.A little like fuel.there are a lot of people who cannot afford dearer food as it is.Why are we not chasing after the other supermarkets.Mind you have not found cheap chicken at Waitrose. Smile Smile

Must be nice to be able to put £30000 of your own money into your hobby horse...I wish.

Recently stayed at a camp site near Kendal, went for a walk and came across a converted barn selling farm produce. Decided to treat ourselves and paid a small fortune for four small organic lamb chops. Tough as old boots and completely tasteless.

Back to HFW I watched a program where he went to a hotel and served the staff with a battery turkey and a free range organic one. There were 12 to 1 staff and the only one who preferred the taste of the free range one was HFW Shocked

It's all right for those who can afford it but many can't and in my view it's to Tesco and the other big supermarkets who make more foods affordable to the many that credit should go.

Still, I don't think there'd be any contest from the viewpoint of the turkeys as to which was happier during its life!

I don't care what it costs and who can't afford it nothing should have to live like battery meat chickens.

No-one can argue with that.

But I would think a better solution would be an EU one because Tesco and others just facilitate money grabbing breeders.

Well I assume Tesco and the likes don't get their hands dirty actually owning production facilities directly.

One of my first summer jobs at the age of about 15 was at a battery Hen farm. I can only say that the conditions for the birds were appalling.

If the farmers want to make money from battery hens then their hands are tied as to space requirements. They do humanely kill "ill" birds as soon as they spot them and we would kill about half a dozen a day which, out of tens of thousands (yes you read that correctly), was not a noticeable number.

I'm surprised the RSPCA hasn't taken an interest in battery farms.

I know the price of food has to be kept low but, IMHO battery farms are not humane. If all chickens were humanely reared then the price wouldn't be that much higher than the battery farms and the farmers would have something to produce on their "rested" land.
