The suggestions given to you are all things that i have tried and have happened to me. It is mainly on.....Yep....Sony Vaio's
Do you have the back up disc? It has happened that drivers have got corrupted and a new installation is easier for you to do. Place recovery disc in dvd and start laptop, if you can see instructions then follow them to do either a repair or full installation. If you do not see anything once it has started then do not press any buttons yet.
You did not say if you see writing on screen on boot up when you start now.
Vaio are also known for the screen to go, not easy to fix.
I am no expert or technician Alec, I just come across a lot of Vaio's that I need to access the problem and evaluate the cost of cure if I am unable to solve by means above or similar. It depends on symptoms.
See if you can borrow the leads as above, this could be the reason.
Good luck
Steve

Not wanting to be confontational - but...
If a machine starts to boot, nothing is on the screen, and caps/numlock lights stay on - this is almost certainly hardware.
Using recovery CDs etc will only fix corrupted/broken OS's
Sorry to correct - but I've seen people use recovery disks, realise they've wiped everything, then come to us and say "well someone said to try it..." when the issue has not been related.
I may well be wrong (see sig!) but suggestions to restore laptops are dangerous on forums as people can and do more harm.
So suggest Alemo completely ignores all comments re; Windows until the laptop boots; the screen is visible, LEDs go off, he can enter BIOS and gets a windows error of sorts

Power button lights and stays on, num lock and caps lock etc light and stay on. Disk light flashes once and goes out and stays out. There is no disk activity so I think its serious.
It sounds more and more like the motherboard isn't booting up. Num lock / caps lock on and staying on generally means the processor isn't running. The hard disk light will flash, as that generally happens through hardware, without the processor being involved.
What stops the processor running? A power supply fault, a processor fault, memory fault, or motherboard fault. If you can get to the memory (usually available for upgrading, see your handbook), make sure the modules are seated properly. Anything else will almost certainly need the case taking apart, and that is probably a job for a technician.
Just a thought - is it by any chance still under warranty?

Did you try the memory? Remove SIMM 2? If this doesn't change - remove SIMM1 and put the one that was in 2 in 1. (some laptops NEED SIMM1 - but SIMM2 is optional - they will be labelled)
Take both SIMMS out and see. This WILL make it not boot - but unless it beeps an error code then it sounds like motherboard/CPU
I'm googled out.
You could always call Sony tech support - they may try and help
EDIT: Another link - same issues - RAM or motherboard

I am afraid this won't be very exact advice because I don't know the laptop you have but...
You should try and get into the "Setup", BIOS or CMOS. These are all effectively different terms for the same thing. Usually most PCs will go to this start up control if you press F2 or DELete during the very first stage after switching on. Sadly I can't tell you which Sony Vaios use or it maybe that it uses another key. But try pressing F2 and DELete fairly rapidly immediately after turning the machine on. Hopefully, you will eventually be rewarded by seeing the BIOS screen.
Again, I don't know your specific machine but...
The will be a number of pages. The first page should tell you what hard disk it thinks it has and even what memory is has.
Look through the pages until you find an option for "Auto Detect" ing the hard disk. If it finds the hard disk in working order, it will tell you so. If the hard disk has crashed, it will tell you that there is no hard disk present.
Lets assume the hard disk hasn't crashed, the next thing is to look for the page which allows you to set memory test at startup. Tell it to do so.
Now make sure you save the "new setup" and exit the BIOS.
At this point it will look for memory present if memory is working and set itself accordingly and then will reboot automatically.
During the bootup it should show the memory that is working as it test it so you can see if is all there or not. Also it now should know about what hard disk there is
If after doing all this, you still get nothing on your screen, it may be that you have a screen connection fault.
Listen for any beeps during start up. If there is a fundamental boot problem, the number of beeps tells you what is wrong.
Again, you need the machine's manual to interpret the beep count.
Hope this helps.

Alemo, my Sony Vaio laptop is knackered too - motherboard failure just weeks out of warranty. I will never buy another Vaio. Fortunately the HDD was still OK so I put it in an external drive case with USB connector and recovered all my files and photos.
My steam driven 1997 Toshiba Satellite Pro chugs on and on. So, I bought a new Toshy laptop 18 months ago and am still delighted with it.

Go on, rub his nose in it!
A bit off topic (sorry), but if you do need to replace the Sony, another vote for Tosh from this direction after buying dozens of them for teachers in schools. They're very good and solid.
Hope you have some luck at the repairers - come back and tell us how you get on.
