Three weeks ago I decided I was getting a new computer. Several people recommended Dell, so I contacted them.
I have been promised a quote (by E mail) and literature (by snail mail). I have phoned and spoken to people on 4 occasions now (on 2 more occasions I wasn't able to get through their system and speak to a human being). Four times they have promised to send bumph to me. Sadly, after 2 weeks I have received nothing.
I'm sure that others have received better service, but if this is indicative of what I may expect from them then I won't be buying
Dell only want corporate buyers, and their salespeople are a bit dorkish, like any big hardware outfit on small margins. The after sales service contract is hawked around, so chances are that the cheapest will win it and who ever eventually turns up won't have a spare, and might not even have seen a computer like yours.
Buy local: it will definitely go wrong, so when it does you/they will be nearby. Eventually they work ok. Buying from dell is like buying a M/H from the continent unseen. Might work, might not - then what?
I bought a dell laptop for travelling almost 3 years ago now - and there was a mix-up at the very beginning, but then all went well. They have always responded to emails I have sent and their phone help was excellent at the time I needed it.
I was happy with their service, so had recommended them to my daughter for a main computer, she also had a muck-up in the beginning and then happily no further problems.
So maybe somewhere they need to improve their front end....why not order what you want online, there are usually good discounts as well.

Dell are OK if you realise what sort of outfit they are.
They want you to select and configure your machine on the internet, if you are able to do this you can get some really good deals.
For example just after Xmas I got a 2.4Mhz Celereon, with 512Mb of Ram, 40 GB hardrive, 48x CD ROM, Soundcard, Ethernet Card, Keyboard, Mouse with Windows XP Home for Ģ151 delivered (No monitor) delivery was within 10days.
I don't think you could have too many complaints with that

I'm afraid Dell have gone from being bespoke suppliers of businesses to competing witht the likes of Tiny and TIme (if not the same). Gateway started the push to get rid of boxes asap with little after service and these companies have followed suit.
Personally, i would try the little local company for decent stuff who will be able to tell you exactly what is going to go in it and if it cocks up as sometimes they do, can't help that, it is only a short distance or a phone call to a human to resolve the prob.
I have loads of these clients who had PC's from above but now buy from me simply because I am available all the time, cheap for quality components and I install it in their home and set up email etc for them included in the price.
But I only do locals as that is all I can sensibly service at a high standard and get loads of work - too much really.

android has it in one, M&D. Dell offer extremely good value-for-money bundles on the internet, because they keep their other costs low. They are not the company to help advise you on what you want/need. They are also big boy corporate in trying to lock you into their products by making it extremely difficult to upgrade other than through them. As an example, their motherboards are not standard swappable units.

I didn't want a quote. They insisted on sending me one! (or rather, not sending me one!)
After having looked on-line I had some queries and decided to speak to them.(Upgrades was one of the issues Dave) The first guy I spoke to was very good....only he didn't do what he promised to do. Everyone else has been second rate, and also failed to do what was promised.
I hesitate to say this but someone else has raised it. The calls are being handled in India. I don't care what country the calls are handled in, I don't care about the race, colour, religion, gender, sexual orientation, inside leg measurement or even if he is wearing a kilt. I do care that the halfwits can't do what they say they will do!
having been down the 'time' route when angie needed a new computer cos i'd nicked her laptop we went to localman and paid over the odds for a computer so we would have good local service.
he's buggerred off to spain and opened a bar

Don't be giving Pusser any ideas smifee! , all his customers will not be best pleased if he does a runner ...Then again,..I wonder what colour a smurf will turn if choked!
We've just bought our third computer in 7 years from Mesh.
While some people may have had poor experiences with them we have been very satisfied with their sales team and their aftersales.
