We have enjoyed motorhoming for many years but due to a sudden illness earlier this year my husband has now partial paralysis in his lower limbs. He has been the main driver but unless we can find a suitable van ie automatic which can be fitted with hand controls, I am now the only driver. His first reaction was that we would have to give up the van - CI Cipro twin but I am gradually gaining confidence and he is able to access the van through the cab with help of grab handles. We can't go far at the moment due to endless hospital appointments but I can see accessible parking becoming a problem with over 22 feet of van (and me parking it!) so we are thinking about sizing down to a high top conversion. We would need to use it daily so would need 4 belted seats. My husband is over 6 foot 2" so would need 2 long singles or a very large double bed. I have looked at Horizons unlimited which seems a good solution but it is a long way away as we live in the North East of England. Has anyone any advice or any suggestions PLEASE?

This would be better in the disabled section of the forum, and, no doubt a moderator will adjust its place.
So, theres loads of disabled motorhomers on here, and they will certainly help you out with the best info possible....that of experience.
Be patient, and they'll turn up..

I can't offer any advice about types of van but good on yer both for carrying on camping and I hope you are soon suited.
I might be completely wrong about this but is there not some scheme to remit tax ( VAT ?) on a vehicle that is intended for your sole use ? There are firms that specialise in adapting vans to your needs and they will know eg

Your right G, if a 'van is adapted for a registered diabled person then it will be VAT exempt. I believe Invicta posted about this a while ago.
Blondel, my partner is burdened with MS and recovering from a cancer op, which is why we got a 'van. All we could find in our price range was a manual gearbox so I do all the driving. We hope you find a suitable solution, Grizzly's link may provide some good options.
best regards Rob & Sue.

- (Roy Wood Transits) and see their mobility range. They seem to be almost specialising in this market and, to be frank, they know their stuff. They do the horizons unlmimited stuff you mention (and I own one) - they also other ranges.
They are almost specialised in this market and will help. It may be a long drive, but they are a nice no-pressure bunch of guys who will be honest and show you round without hard sales tactics. Say Ryan and Mel sent said they were a good bunch and hopefully you'll get a decent cuppa or 2!
They also do a lot of shows, but being smallish they don't take loads of vans.
Suggest you call them and have a chat - IMO if you are looking for a van conversion with accessibility options - these are the guys to speak to.
(I can fully recommend them)
Good luck!
edit: To answer above post - yes VAT can be removed. RWT know all about that and can help out.
