This morning the laptop downloaded the latest windows updates and I had to do a restart to install them.
After the laptop had restarted it would not connect to the internet, this also happened on our other laptop. I did a system restore to yesterday and everything appears to be OK.
Can anybody throw any light on it please. Keep the replies simple as my computing skills are very limited.
Regards
Don

I get the same feeling with Vista, that I used to get with every other Windows up to XP.
I reckon that Mr. Gates has punted out Vista too early, in an effort to be Apple, all the Media types I meet use Apple and the operating system is excellent, and theres no grief from viruses. Shame they're soooo expensive for the same spec.

A major defect has been found in the Internet Domain Name System DNS and these are fixes for that. See BBC.co.uk home page news item for more info.
As I am at present installing these on an XP machine and a Vista machine I may just abort for now, but the XP machine is failing on all downloads, so I may be OK. The vista machine is installing now and I will report back any problems.

I'm not so sure Apple are more expensive, or at least not noticeably so. The problem is that it's difficult to compare like with like. You can't just go by the speed of processor and the amount of memory; what's more important is how the software on the Apple runs compared to the same or similar software on a Windows system.
On one of my Vista laptops I have 2 gig memory, but everything runs too slowly. Similar programs on my Apple run much faster with the same memory. Furthermore, programs which are produced by Apple are much more in tune with the Apple o/s, whereas there is so much iffy software for Windows that compatibility issues are very common.
All day long, I sit between Windows and Apple computers, because I use different software on each. Nothing is perfect but any price premium in favour of Windows becomes insignificant when I factor in the time I spend using tedious workarounds for basic flaws in the appalling Vista.
There are a couple of reasons I can think of for not using Apple - but cost isn't one of them. The first is that there just isn't the variety of industry-standard software which will run on a Mac, compared to Windows. The second is that too many people develop internet-based software which isn't properly Mac compatible, often leaving users with fiddly workarounds.

Vista Laptop when away, but Apple Imac on my desk.
Last couple of Apple updates have screwed up operation system. Kept getting grey screen on bootup. Google search suggested unplugging all usb cables before bootup, this workaround worked for a while.
Recent updates seem to have cured it. Originally set to switch itself off at midnight and on again at 7am, been left on continually since the grey screen saga. Just done a Word update that needed reboot and it seems to be rebooting OK again.
Using XP machine for Sage accounts it did a windows upgrade this morning after bootup. Don't do email on this machine, solely for Sage program. Last accounts computer had problems with virus, Secam virus sent out random statements and quotes from my files, to every email address on system.
One quote sent out was for my biggest overseas customer. This customer in the states soon after stopped placing orders, my guess a competitor got to see the prices I was charging. Only use Apple for email now.
Not used laptop for couple of weeks so may be due for update next time it switched on. Always switch on at home with cable to modem before we go away as when on 3 dongle always seems to find an upgrade to do in the background.
Apple for me good for email, not so good for business programs.
