Hi, Can anyone advise. I use Butane gas at home for cooking, can I use it in the campervan. The dealer we bought the van from said Propane, but I wonder what the difference is, if any at all.

Just bought a French CI Elliot and still finding things out before we go off at the end of July.

Thanks.

Hi Benbow

In a MH you are better off using Propane due to the lower temp that the liquid converts to gas, especially in winter when you will be using the heater.

Hi Benbow! You will find that most folk who use their Motorhomes throughout the year use only Propane.

I remember an Easter BBQ which I struggled to complete because my Butane stopped gassing! Embarassed It was a very cold April that year!

Since then I have gradually swopped all my Butane cylinders to Propane, which I use all year.

Any Butane cylinders can be swopped for Propane. Also, 6kg sizes can be swopped for 13kg...

As they say above, the most suitable Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) for motorhomes is Propane as it changes from liquid to gas at a lower temperature than Butane. So it is better for cold days, when Butane cannot be used.

Unfortunately Propane is slightly more expensive than Butane, but it does burn hotter.
Please remember that each gas needs a different Regulator, the red one is for the red propane cylinders. This is most important.

Another option is to use Autogas, it is a propane gas that is used as a fuel.
You just fill up your onboard tank, as you would do with diesel at a service station. It is a fraction of the cost of Calor, but unfortunately it is expensive to have fitted.
There are many threads on MHF about it

Hi Allan - far be it from me to comment on a technical point, but we use the same regulator and just change the pig-tail when changing over from Butane to Propane.

Not so. Butane burns hotter than propane. There is 25% more heat in a 7 Kg tin of butane than in a 6Kg tin of propane, which is why we took that abroad in our last van - it lasted longer. (presumably that is why propane requires a higher pressure regulator, to get more gas out to to provide the same amount of heat.) In fact we used butane right through the year with no probs, as although butane freezes at about ) deg C, as motorhomes have their bottles inside it takes quite a while to cool the bottle down to ).

We have now fitted Gaslow in our new van, and hence use an unspecified mixture of propane & butane, depending on time of year and where we are in Europe.
