Buying a cheap laptop for my daughter’s birthday next week. Do you have any hot tips in which one to go for? £300 to £400 range would be good

Hi Buttons

Acer are a pretty good low cost brand, IMO.

Also look at Dell refurbished or returned unit. There is a link on their website somewhere to their alternative store. I would try to avoid Advent, E-machines, Medion, etc.

You can get a nice pink Dell

I use ( and am typing on now) a compaq. from Pc world, and it cost about 340.00.

Its fast enough for anything I need, and has Wirless, and 2 gig of Ram, with an 80 gig HDD.

This means virtually nothing to me, but apparently is a good average bit of kit.

However, if I could have an OS choice, I'd have stuck with XP, rather than Vista.

Gerald and Mike. I agree with your conclusions about Dell.

But I disagree with you when you condemn Advent and E Machines. My old Laptop is Advent. Its a badged Hi Grade which at the time I bought it was one of the world's leading laptop maker's and the best seller in the USA. Advent are sold mainly in PC World.

As for E machines they are made by Gateway (again sold mainly in PCW) and I'm very pleased with mine as are other family members who have bought similar machines.

I notice that Dell also have recommenced selling their machines in retail outlets. PCW now sell the Inspiron lap top and I saw them also in Carrefour in France and Spain and also in Auchan, Dunkerque a few months back. Not the coloured versions though.

I can understand what you're saying. In a different life, I have bought a bucket full of E-machine desktops, and I was very pleased with them. Before that, we bought a number of Gateway machines, which I seem to remember were pretty reliable. All of these were desktops.

I wasn't aware of the origins of Advent and E-machines, but then I think most laptops are made by one company in China or something.

I'm glad you've had good experiences with these laptops. I'm sure PC World wouldn't sell them if they were bad products. It's just that when faced with a wide choice in laptops particularly, I will always go for the names I know, and with which I have personally have had good experiences.
