I know that a large proportion of MHFers prefer the head in sand approach to ownership but this is good news
We mainly use our van for weekends or one nights before dog shows with the odd week and fortnight thrown in around the UK.
I've worked out that the pitch costs for our van this year will be around £700, however if we'd used Travelodges and English Country Cottages instead the cost would've been around £3,500 for the overnights. So the van has saved us around £2,800 in accomodation charges.
There should also be savings on food, although we'd probably cook some of our our own whilst staying in a cottage, but maybe a couple of hundred pounds, to bring the savings up to £3,000 a year.
That certainly does a lot to balance up the costs of running a motorhome and small car against two cars and using Travelodges and cottages.

Hi I found it interesting. I got my camper van primarily for the dog trials I attend. The trials are always at least one night stop over unless they happen to be very local.
Anyway since retirement I always travel down the day before (saves worrying about getting there on time) so this involves 2 nights.
Sometimes if its a particularly nice venue (New Forest)I go several days in advance to enjoy and explore the area.
When buying my van several trialist remarked I could get B & B for the next 10 years for the price of the van.
hate B & B anyway but its nice to know that there are saving to be made. Thanks. they are probably just extravagant grumpy old men

MH is your own space - and that makes a heck of a difference - plus so much flexibility - you can always find somewhere to park up if pushed.
Plus this is the only way my wife and I can get any time away from work without making major arrangements (we run our own company) - we can judge the lay of the land at short notice and if all is ok JUST GO!

Absolutely right Vidura, but it quelled a nagging doubt in my mind that I might be paying a lot more than the cost of alternative means of transport and accomodation. As it is the costs are pretty good and the freedom and flexibility and all the other things we like about motorhoming are a bonus.

Hi Vidura, I know exactly what you mean re: owning your own company. We have owned ours for ten years and haven't been away on holiday in all that time apart from the odd 1 night away.

Absolutely - right in a nutshell. That's why most of us do it...... and long may it remain so. We have only been Mh'ing for this year but it has made a considerable change for the be
