I was driving through a narrow street in Mid Wales today, with cars parked all the way down one side, when I came face to face with this big lorry. Even though he was on the wrong side of the road, he decided that my little van should be the one that reversed, and as I didn't fancy getting squashed I tried to oblige. My trailer is a real pig to reverse (or is it the bad driver!), and I had to pull forward several times to try again, not easy as he was pushing me to keep going. Eventually I got as far as a car parked on my side of the road that I had no chance of manoeuvring round, and he gave in and backed up.

So is there any recognised hand signal that says "I can't reverse, you'll have to"?

And what happens if you meet someone coming the other way who can't reverse either Confused

having lived in an area with single track roads for the pas 30yrs, i have just learnt to be very good at reversing anything- (eventually even a trailer) am just stunned by how many people are not prepared/able to reverse!

As a lorry driver I'm embarrassed to say that some will assume the strongest will inherit the earth. Wink
If it was an artic then it's even stevens (your both towing) but if one is going up hill then they have precident or if all else fails the most experienced driver (depending on circumstances) should reverse.
Dare I ask, how qualified are you to reverse a trailer? I only ask because there are too many people towing trilers that have no idea how to reverse them. You may not be one of them, in which case please forgive me.
John

Have you noticed there are even more now that caravan movers are becoming very common Laughing

I met a caravan on the Fort William - Malaig road a good few years back and he wouldn't reverse. I was towing a car on an A-Frame and couldn't reverse. I eventually had to unhitch and reverse both units into whatever space I could find. It was on the rocky wooded section and there were no passing places in sight and I had a bus behind me. When I got to Malaig and found out ferries didn't run on Sundays, gulp, I had to go back. I put my flashers on and had no trouble at all, everything just pulled over Very Happy I believe that stretch of road is still single track and I have never towed a car touring Scotland since. Too much hassle.

I tow trailers of all sizes, so I have had to learn to reverse, (the smaller ones are the hardest) however on occasions it's not practicable to do so and if I come across a pushy driver, then a shrug of the shoulders and fold my arms and just sit there usually does the trick.

I'me on holiday and in no rush. Wink

Hi Pete,

I used to road last August and there's still a bit of single lane road left but they were working on it.
