My TomTom (700) is brilliant............never let me down, always gets me to where I want..............have camera alerts as a bonus when I bought it but nothing other than bog standard stuff.

Maps are UK......Well I would never have guessed you'd get me driving to France Rolling Eyes ...............so......not that we will need it necessarily, but I think I ought.......to get Europe maps put in.........just in case we get separated............(we are going with pals who will have europe GPS)

I have trawled through the various threads........"my Tom Toms dead".....or...."map download crashed HELP!!"........and "Tom Tom website stole my identity"....type postings and to be honest I'm not at all confident about upgrading my otherwise reliable TT700, so the question is.......do I look for a cheapo GPS with europe to use when we go to France etc.....or is there a place I can go to get step by step instructions to update Tom for tech dead morons like me?

please HELP!!!

Hi Badger

I have Tomtom on a PDA (hand held computer) with GPS capability. My maps are on a SD memory card. there is no reason to download anything more to your GPS unit as the program is already there. You may have to go into the settings and change map but thats all. You can get a map
which will cover the whole of Europe including the UK.

Hope this is of some help to you.

However, in short, Tom Tom Home software on your PC with the device connected should allow you to update maps relatively simply. You'll probably need maps of Western Europe unless you're going way out East.

Allow plenty of time (and a possibility of some server grief) for the map download but you can buy straight from the site over the web. There is currently a 30% off sale going on which suggests later maps might provide users with Navcore8 functionality (lane guidance etc) but if you need maps now you'll still be with Navcore 7 (which will be what you already have - Navcore is TT's equivalent of the operating system on a computer, maps are seperate but can be dependant).

So now I've completely confused you, follow the link and read some better written posts! Smile

If I may make a suggestion. Do not down load the maps over the internet. If anything happens to your GPS you may lose access to the maps. This happened to me, the battery on my PDA went flat when left in the van over the winter, on recharging I had to re-install Tom Tom, I then had to go on line to get the code to re-access the maps.

If you lose your map for any reason the internet download will only be available for a limited period, in my case one year. Better be safe than sorry, pay the little extra and get a hard copy of your maps. Also if you are using an SD card to store the maps ensure you have at least one back-up copy.

My PDA with Tom Tom 5 is now almost four years old and has done sterling service all over the UK and Europe. However, I do also use Autoroute on my laptop with a bluetooth dongle to give me maps of areas I'm visiting. I use this to plan routes (which often vary with the cry 'that looks interesting, lets go down there' ).

Devon,
I also used PDAs for a long time and agree about the registration. However I think it's slightly different with the dedicated units and the maps you download are tied to your device. So if the battery goes flat it doesn't matter.

If I had more time I'd check this so please don't take it as gospel but I think it generates a key as part of the map process BEFORE you download it.

The lengthy and somewhat irritating problems with PDAs is one of the reasons Tom Tom aren't pushing that side of the business and also why PDA users are stuck with Version 6. It's also why I now own a 720!

FWIW, if you use home you store the downloaded map in the Tom TOm folder in My Documents so if you have a catastrophe and have to reset it'll still be useable.
