So I been looking to get a new Sat Nav, and theres basically two choices I narrowed it down to.

First is a HGV specific avaiable from Maplins, which does UK and can be uploaded like Autoroute, so you choose which bit of Europe you want,

Second is a Sony NU93 thing, which is sposed to be capable of imputing type of vehicle, including HGV. This includes Europe on the system as standard.

WHats the general thoughts on having this much info, will the details of the individual countries suffer, and POI's, will they be compramised?

I would love to see what you think, as it seems both are good units.

Can't have too much information Bandy . . . so long as it is easily selectable so you can choose how much to have on show.

My only reservation is, "Are they genuinely HGV specific???"

If I were in your size twelves ( Very Happy ) I would ask some probing questions about exactly how they cater for the needs of HGV drivers.

Last I heard the mapping software which is essential for this function was not going to be available for some time. Confused

Shall be very interested to read your report back! Very Happy

Cheers

Well, I saw the MAplins thing first on this forum, so I bimbled off and had a look first hand.

The blokey was happy for this to be demo'd and although the start up is a bit slower than my TOM TOM, this maybe because it has to choose vehicle specific roads, rather than any road bigger than a footpath.

The display was good, and I asked the machine to tell me the route that I had done that day.

Seaford - Ealing Studios. This is a complicated thing, although the main route is simple....M25-A40 and bits, the entry to the Industrial place the studios are in has 2 roads, a widgy one, and a big'un for trucks. The SAT NAV ignored the little road, and told me to go for the wider road. So, on first look it works well.

The Sony, according to a forum for truckers, may be a better option, as, Like my old Garmin Street pilot you can dictate which type of vehicle you have. But...with 2 gig flash memory, I was wondering how detailed the whole of Europe could be, including 7 digit post coding for the UK, plus POIs.

Still not sure, 200 quids alot of money to spend on a failed experiment.

Let you know later, as I found a dealer for the Sony and I is going to go try it later today.l

Do either or both take an SD card?

Not such a problem if they do as memory is almost unlimited. I keep all my POIs on a card to save cluttering up the internal memory. Very Happy

I just want to find one that will avoid goat trails and people's back alleys!! Shocked Shocked Rolling Eyes

Cheers - look forward to more info after your shopping trip.

Ok, so, as requeted by our esteemed Moderator. I now give my conclusive and absolute report of the 2 sat navs.

Saw the HGV version from Maplins, and now have seen the Sony.

Still undecided. I have asked for information regarding the downloads of Europ for the Maplin one, and you can download maps for Europe. Just that they didnt know what avaialable. Sony however, seems to have a good sysytem, but the demo didnt seem to be able to alter the vehicle as promised.

Still non the wiser therefore, but am leaning in the direction of....

Using the Mpalin HGV Sat NAv in the UK, and using the TOmTom1 which I already have when in europe. I can almost plan where I am going when in Continenetal mode, as I travel on Motorways almost exclusively and seldom go through big towns as I have definite time scales and detinations ( mostly Event venues such as race tracks etc) so thats pretty much my opinion, there not a one size fits all unit.

Thanks Bandy. Very Happy

So - positively indecisive then. Wink

I rather expected that from what I had heard.

I don't think suitable mapping software is available to do what we want.

I bought a snooper with Truckmate software from a company called syrius. You can input your vehicle dimensions etc.It uses the Navteq mapping software. When I swap between motorhome and car,it certainly does what it says,ie avoids narrow lanes, low bridges etc.It isn't cheap but it does appear to do what it claims.

hi what about this one:

From what I gather, the maps have most of the info needed to do truck routes etc. but people like tomtom don't use it, maybe to keep map sizes down.

Western Europe needs about 800mb on my tomtom classic, which strangely is less than when I first bought it, then the maps came on 6CD's and totalled well over 1gig.
