We have just purchased a Suzuki Grand Vitara swb 5 door Automatic , we will be taking it to Car-a-tow to get it set up for towing when we get 5 minutes.

Hi Chris,

Can you tow an automatic? I did'nt think this was possible if it is very useful information.

Thanks,

Graham

Some you can, some you cannot. Do your research first. We were told by Honda dealer we could tow a Jazz with CVT. Honda said NO, AFTER we bought the car. It went back after a week.
Smart, also said NO, BUT they were wrong, you can and we did.
Toyota, Citroen and Peugeot say YES for their CVT versions.
Good Luck and don't believe everything you are told. Try and find someone who actually tows the car you want. If that fails ask the manufacturer and if they say yes, get it in writing.

Thanks Denis,

This is one reason why I started the topic. It is very useful to know what others do and why and how etc.

Graham, one other item for your consideration list is to speak to the company who will be fitting the towbar to the car. The attachment point has to penetrate the front valance somewhere and in some cases the valance has to be cut about, in others it is a neat job through the grill section.
My towbar was fitted by Chris Cox, (well recommended) and I had these discussions with him before I bought the car. In our case Nissan Micra which tows easily, so easily in fact that we keep the reversing camera on all the time we are towing to make sure it is still there.
If I need to sell the car the towing gear can be removed and the car returned to standard.
The towing attachment provokes lots of discussions in car parks!

When we had an RV we towed a Renault Clio. But since changing from RV to MH we changed the car for a lighter weight Fiat Panda (the new shape one).

And I must say, what a great little car it is. It has 4 doors which is great with two kids. We now also use as it as run around at home to save on fuel costs etc on our big family car. (E Class Mercedes Estate)

Tow's like a dream as well, don't know it's on the back. Fitted with a braked A frame by Chris Cox.

On the M42 today I was passed by a 6 wheel Autotrail towing a panel van based people carrier with an A-frame. I think it was a VW.

Thanks Colin,
Something else I have learnt. I didn't know you could remove a Chris Cox towing frame without damage to the car. Mine is a Towtal one and I would have to sell it as a tow car complete with A frame and start again with the new car. So worth knowing, he's not far from me either.

Thanks,

Graham
