Well, I can hardly contain my excitement! After some two and a half years of searching for a motorhome with the layout, price and condition that suits me, not to mention the task of trying to convince hubby he wants one as much as I do, I may have found the van for me.

Some members may remember my numerous requests for advice, rantings about lack of enthusiasm by aforementioned hubby, and even an offer to swop him for one more keen (had some interesting offers, actually).

Tomorrow I will travel the length of the country to take a first look at my choice - and I hope, drive it back home.

Having got all pink and silly about it all (I am a girl), I now have to consider boring stuff like insurance. I have had a quote from Churchill of £214.00. Is this good for a van conversion, Peugeot Boxer, year 2004? Should I try Saga?

Is there anything else I should know when buying it, apart from making sure it has four wheels and an engine?

Autumn

You read like a disaster waiting to happen: Taking much cash a long way and you don't know what to look for - you're not that bad are you ?

The van needs a thorough going over, proof of ownership and service history for a start. Then a serious look at the condition.

If you really are no better than "four wheels and an engine" then take someone with you or even post the destination here in case someone on here could help.

Thanks for your concern, Hilldweller. Yes, a pal is driving me up there, one who knows where the engine is kept. Should there really be a wheel on each corner, by the way? No, really, I hope I'm not quite as dumb as I sound but I didn't think about proof of ownership and, no, I won't be carrying the dosh on me, so no point hijaacking me on the M1 folks.

Would you like a second opinion on that Smile

Once he/she has done the van bit then you are closely examining A FURNISHED HOUSE. Power/heating/cooling/water/toilet/furnishings/fittings/damp.

It's far from trivial. Any mistake can cost you. So do it, have a cuppa, drive it, check it again. Do not rush it.

You don't say whether it's a dealer but any warranty is only as good as the dealer and there are some right (*)(*&&ds out there.

Take a damp meter autumn, make sure you see the V5 and the address on it is the one you are viewing it at! Is it a dealer or private sale?? Didn't think churchill did motorhome insurance to be honest, am wondering if that quote is just for a peugeot boxer van not motorhome as to me for a first time motorhome owner it is on the cheap side.

Where are you going to view as hillys suggestion of taking an experienced motorhomer sounds like a good un! Good luck with it and let us know how you get on!!!

OK, I'm now turining from pink to pale - you will love this, Hilldweller, it is a private sale. My sensible friend won't let me part with my pennies if he thinks it's a wobbler.

I was also surprised that Churchill did motorhome insurance but he asked me if it was a DIY or professional conversion, so he knew what he was quoting on. Having read a few posts here, though, I don't know if that includes breakdown in UK and Europe. I am in the AA, does that count?

What the heck is a damp metre?

Autumn.

Ok Autumn hunny am thinking more research is required!! Churchill only insure the van for the 'road risk' no contents cover is included!!!! Just gave them a ring myself as have not heard of them doing motorhome insurance before, hope you don't mind!! But better you get a suitable policy!!!! This is not the kind of policy you want, you need one which covers all the habitation part of the van as well. You need a specialist motorhome insurer. If you click

this is the list of insurers who will give you a discount by mentioning motorhomefacts!

Motorhomes can be susceptible to damp so you need a meter to test all the walls for damp as it can be an extremely costly business to sort out.
Please consider asking for someone from motorhomefacts who is experienced in motorhomes to go with you and your friend, it might well save you from a costly mistake. Remember though this is not criticism or anything like that, we were all new once Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy We would all prefer to see you with something suitable as you have searched long and hard!

You are right, the chap said the insurance didn't cover contents. I supposed my other insurance I have for cameras and the like while on the move would cover those.

Does the European breakdown cover provide cover all year for whenever you take a trip across the channel?

Probably a bit late to canvas for help - I leave early tomorrow morning. As a van conversion it shouldn't have some of the problems that go with a coachbuilt. I will have a day or so to think it over.

Hi Autumn unfortunately your home contents wouldn't cover any of it!! Obviously it needs to cover all the fixtures and fittings in the van, if it were damaged. Not sure about European cover you would need to check the policy wording carefully.
You never know about the canvasing I would give it a go. Where are you travelling to??
Hope all goes well for you. I certainly would not buy it on the spot! If interested you really would be better getting it HPI'd this will tell you if there is any outstanding finance on it etc etc.
Be prepared to haggle as well.
