Hi I am sure i've read on here that there is a way to use the laptop ( probably not internet connected ) to pump in co-ordinates to find final destination ie. aires in France, Germany etc.

The reason I ask is tho. I have a good Sat-nav it has no facility to accept co-ordinates.

As post codes in France etc. only take you to the area ie. village,town etc. I am looking for a way to get to final destination without driving up & down little roads looking for it.

If this isn't possible may have to invest in cheap 2nd. Sat nav.

Hi Alex,

Microsoft Autoroute has the facility to plot places by co-ordinates. You can pick up a copy from PCworld or such (even Ebay but watch out for illegal copies) Even an older version works really well. We use Autoroute 2006 and download our aires from MHF and use AR to pinpoint them before we set off.

I'm sure there are other cheaper or even free versions of mapping software but most require you to be on-line to use them which would be no good when on the move

MS Autoroute works for me. Enter the co-ordinates then zoom in to get the full address.

My Garmin is able to accept coordinates indirectly.

I can put them in Excel, save them as a CSV file (comma separated variables) and load them using the free Garmin facility POILoader.

I can even include the name of the POI (point of interest), and it appears on the map with the name attached.

For example: -1.3572, 54.2319, "Thirsk Racecourse CC" is the entry for the Camping Club site at Thirsk Racecourse. (Note, the coordinates have to be entered in decimal, but that is easy to do in Excel. This example is Longitude 1 degree 21 minutes 26 seconds East; Latitude 54 degrees 13 minutes 55 seconds North.)

If you aren't a computer nerd like me, POIEdit from DNote software will do all the hard work of conversion to decimal and produce POI files for all the popular formats including Garmin, TomTom, Navman, MioMap and so on. I cannot see a facility on my copy of POIEdit to use Ordnance Survey co-ordinates.

Autoroute seems to be the route ( no pun intended ) to go.
Would I be correct in thinking that if I knew someone with the autoroute software disc that I could borrow it load into laptop return the disc to owner and then use autoroute program or is it only possible to run with disc inserted ?

As you will no doubt have gathered computers are not my strong point.

I've used Autoroute for years, but I do believe that the later versions of Autoroute are protected against copying ie you can only install it two or three times.
