A question was asked about gas consumption and I pointed out that you should be able to work this out for yourselves from the appliance handbooks. I did and came up with the following:

From the handbook to my fridge, consumption given at 0.27Kgms per 24hrs on Hi setting.
So if you ran a fridge continually on gas, a full 13 Kgm bottle should last
just over 48 days if you were not doing any cooking or heating.
I rarely use the heating in summer and cook with gas probably 3 to 4 times per week. Lets say 250gms per meal ?

Water heater is rated a 120gms per hour, lets say it is used 2 hours per
day.

So if you were on gas only, consumption per week would be :

Water heating ...............0.24x7 = 1.68Kgms
Fridge ..........................0.27x7 = 1.89Kgms
Cooking 4 days ...................... = 1.00Kgms

Total per week ..................... = 4.57Kgms

It looks to me as though it is quite feasible to go 3 weeks on a full 13kgm
bottle.

If you used a hook up every day, only cooking would use gas in a modern van these days. I don't see why, if my figures are correct you could not go 13 weeks before running out.

In actual fact I have never run out of gas on continental trips. I take two full 13Kg propane bottles and even on a 2 month trip to Norway, I have survived without a top up. With 100 days a year all round use I only use 2 to 3 13KG bottles but I mostly use hook ups.

Hope this helps.

Peedee,
It's amazing how people can while away the hours. The theory is great but lots of even new vans still do not have electric for water heating or space heating.
However, I have to agree with you, we are all gas on a new van, but have never gone beyond a 6kg on two week holiday.

hi peedee, in the winter in spain i get about two weeks per 13k bottle, thats fridge, cooking, water heating and also some van heating. so your 3 weeks sounds about right to me without the van heating. i use a spanish bottle and regulator and backfeed into the BBQ point on my van, the bottles are 13 euros each for exchange so alot cheaper than uk ones. all the best sean

We have a 15kg bottle of gas. We bought it in March 2006 when we bought, dare I say it - a caravan. We used it in all weather and all seasons. In August 2007 we traded it in for our current motorhome and transferred the gas bottle from the caravan. We used this gas for only 1 weekend away. Two weeks later we bought a new Rangemaster Dual fuel cooker for the kitchen at home. We intended getting a gas tank installed outside to fuel the 6 burners on the hob, there being no natural gas in the area. Just so that we could test the cooker we temporarily connected the gas bottle from the motorhome, it's still connected and still has gas in it!!!!!

OK the 2 ovens and the grill are electric but the burners on the hob are in daily use. Pretty impressive?

Hi.
Yes I agree with you Peedee about 3 weeks for us on 1 13kg gaslow bottle without hook up.
So why do so many people have 2 gaslow bottles fitted when all you have to do is top up when you get fuel ?
We use the spare space in the gas locker for dog towels, BBQ legs etc. etc.
Helen.

Hi Peedee,

That sort of agrees with our assessment. We use approx 13kgs every 3 weeks and that drops to 1 week in winter. But then we use BBQ every day and in winter use gas for heating. I realise that most of us don't read our operating manuals but I was surprised to read in the N+B manual that 2 x 13kgs in winter will last approx 2 weeks. That was exactly how long ours lasted without EHU and BBQ'ing every day

Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy
Gerry,
It took me all of 30secs to trawl my files for a calculation I did long before MHF even appeared on our screens. I probably did it on a cold miserable rainy day. Very Happy

Pleased to see it is producing some agreement.

In our last van (i.e. before we had Gaslow so consumption mattered abroad), we found we used about 10-11 Kg butane (more heat in butane than propane) over a 4 week foreign trip. This included using EHU from time to time. So although we took 3 * 7KG bottles, we never ever needed the 3rd.

Now with 2 * 11Kg Gaslow bottles it's a cinch! (Not been to Spain with Gaslow, though)
