Hi. can you computer experts help. Since my wife has found "genesreunited" I can't get near my PC. It is on broadband cable modem.
My laptop is Wi-Fi enabled so what do I need in the PC so I can connect wirelessly to the internet from the laptop.

Hi Sid, if your laptop is already wireless enabled you just need a 'Router'

Very simple. Get an ADSL wireless router which has fixed connectivity as well, standard RJ45 connectors.
On the laptop go to the command prompt and key ipconfig /all
the pc will reply with all of the physical addresses of all your possible connections, to close that window then key exit followed by return.
One of these addresses is the wireless connection. Copy down the values which are 6 double character letters/numbers and enter these as a user on the wireless router.
It takes longer to key this than to do this. Most routers use an Internet Explorer window to enter all of the values required.

I have a similar problem, but my main PC is connected to Broadband via an ADSL modem rather than cable. My laptop isn't currently wireless enabled, so I know I'll need to get a wireless card for it, but do I need a wireless gateway for my main PC, or can I get away with simply connecting a wireless network USB adapter to it? My main PC is permanently on and connected to BT Broadband lite (the best I can get so far from the exchange). It seems a bit of a waste to have to throw away my existing ADSL Broadband modem, but I keep getting conflicting advice.

Braesman,

Unfortunately, you cannot practically re-use the ADSL modem if it is a USB type. Make sure you buy a wireless ADSL router with built in modem, and not a cable/DSL router. If your main PC has a built in network adapter (LAN), then it can connect via cable to the router, and your laptop via wireless, or you will have to purcahse either a wired or wireless adapter for that too. If you are genuinely connected by a cable modem (i.e. it plugs in to the network adapter on your PC), then make sure you buy a cable/DSL wireless router which is typically quite a bit cheaper than an ADSL router with in-built modem.

The PC can connect to the router via a network cable (as it is now to the modem), and your laptop via wireless.

just one point, you dont "have" to use a wireless router, there are two PCs and one laptop here coupled into an ordinary (DG814) router which will take a few more pcs if needed.
You can connect PCs via USB leads
