For absolute clarity could somebody confirm that it is uneccessary to use a firewall if your laptop is connected wirelessly other than the standard vista firewall.

A router, wireless or otherwise is no guarantee that you are firewalled from the outside world. Some corperate routers may include this function but typically home routers do not.

Some routers like Linksys can be set to block PCs that do not have Zonealarm Pro installed from accessing the Internet, but that's not a firewall function.

Many wireless routers, typically the free access points do not include any encryption or security. This makes you vunerable - other folks using the access point maybe able to see your PC.

You should always have a Firewall installed on your PC however you connect to the outside world. In my opinion Windows Firewall is not sufficient. It does its best to block access to your PC from the outside but it does not block unauthorised programs from sending stuff out. You may download a malicious program that could send your details back to some unscrupulous source.

Its brilliant and doesn't take over your computer. Have used AVG for 4 years after suggestion from Daily Telegraph computer doctor when I h kept having problems with Macafee crashing my computer

That is exactly my understanding of the situation. However, some others take adifferent view and that is why I felt the need to ask the question again.

I have installed Zone Alarm with my AVG8 and all is well.

That's a good test. Don't agree we are straying off the point. We are telling the original poster that AVG 8 is good and that he should install a firewall and ignore some of the earlier threads saying one is unnecessary if you use a laptop at WIFI locations.

I've just checked mine at the 'ShieldUp' web site and I am told that it doesn't recognise that I have a computer-what a relief!!!!

OK, for clarification:

You should have a firewall installed (zonealarm etc) and not just reliant on your router/windows firewall.
