I had one, now bought a proper gauge that sits on top of the bottle.

Any gauge that works on pressure or temp is useless.
The only sure fire way of telling how much gas you have is with a built in float level gauge.

This one would only work either during or immediately after using gas at quite a fast rate for several minutes.

It relies on the latent heat of vaporisation cooling the cylinder, and since the liquid gas vaporises from the surface, in theory the coldest bit of the cyclinder is at the surface of the liquid gas inside.

It does work, but is not a very accurate guide, and it's much cheaper and just as effective to feel the cylinder wall with your hand.

Hi

The other option is to place a hot cloth on the side of th cylinder. You need to be using a gas applicance at the time though and you should see a clear level marked by condensation on the cylinder that corresponds to the level of LPG in the cylinder.

If you are prepared to take out the cylinder you can get an accurate measure by weighing. It is not difficult with one of the new digital luggage scales. They are however a bit expensive.
The empty weight of a Calor cylinder is in pounds and ounces on he aluminium disc round the valve.
There is also an ultrasonic level detector but they are very expensive and I have been told difficult to get to work well.
