We just imported our new motorhome and we are aware that we need to make a couple of changes to comply with UK requirements.

Does anyone know where we can get a mph overlay (or similar) for the kph speedo fascia on a Sprinter 416cdi?

Also, we thought we'd have to change the headlights but having driven back to UK in the dark, the lights appear to be correctly aligned for the UK. Any comments?

Regards

Hi Hymer Couple welcome to the community.

I imported our Hymer a few years ago, and had to sort all this out. We have never done the speedo, and it has now had to have its first MOT and it was never queried....so unless you want to spend a lot of money don't bother, just write out the different speeds and learn them, we also have a gps and that shows yours speeds in either kph or mph, so that makes it even easier.

Lights - this took me ages to solve, and in the end my German buyer helped sort it out, I tried the manufacturers of the lights in the UK and got nowhere. It isn't difficult, they have to turn the lights (I think it was to the left - apparently there are three screws the lights fit into, and they turn them to fit in the next one around.....it took the garage about 2 hours (first time they had to do it) and said if they were to do another one it would be quicker..

We are in North Devon and if you are around here I can tell you where we ended up, the garage is in Milton Damerell - W.Saunders - they are actually Fiat Service place, but did our Merc.

You also have to change the rear lights to conform for the UK, but that proved simple to do ourselves.

Best of luck
Carol

Hi Carol,

Thanks for your input.

I think we'll do the same...leave the speedo as it is, I can change the rear fog myself.....and the lights appear to have already been done by my supplying dealer..if not I'll have a look at those later.

The only worry is that having taken the necessary papers to the LVLO, they have decided they want to inspect the vehicle. Hope they're not going to check these items!

Regards

We live in NOrth Devon, so our nearest office is in Exeter, I had spoken to them on the phone and posted in all the papers, including all my German papers as well, and they didn't ask to see it, and sent it all back by registered post as well (I had asked them to, I posted them registered as well). As these papers I want to be able to hand over when I sell my vehicle as a complete history of the Starline.

The vehicle had had to be taken to the equivalent in Germany, and they had inspected it there, checking the VIN numbers etc., and having a look at it, but outside only, they did not require to look inside.

Hi all,

Peter Hambilton of Hambilton Engineering converted my kmph speedo with the correct km/mph overlay for the sum of £75. (The part is £40) He's at Preston, and carries most of the Hymer speedo conversions. Try him at

He may also have a solution for the lighting problem.

Prior to finding out about Peter, I was offered a version by Edgehill, but it turned out to be completely wrong for my Merc.

Cheers

As usual, I only read half the post ! My Merc is a UK import which was supplied with a kmph speedo. When I asked the RAC to test it, they refused to test drive it, as it was not UK road legal. Asked the police, who said that technically, a police officer could issue you with a ticket for failing to comply with C & U conditions, but they thought it was more likely that you would be issued with a notice to correct the fault (Can't remember what the statutory term was.)

They also expressed the view that if you were involved in an accident where speed was a contributory factor, your insurance company could legotimately refuse to meet a claim, as your vehicle was not in a roadworthy condition.

Depends whether you are happy to take the chance I suppose. I personally wasn't, which is why I went ahead and had it converted.

Hi Hymercouple,

I'd agree with smicks comments and err on the side of caution.

Just found this and it may help clarify.

I'd sctrutinise para 2.6 'mods neccesary for use in Britain', particularly the chapters 'left hand traffic' and 'imperial speedo'.

It states that a speedo must include a MPH display and any modified display should be visible and readable in daylight and darkness, i wonder if an overlay would provide this?

On a personal level, if it was me i'd use some of the money saved by importing to buy the correct speedo for this country.

pete.

Hi Hymer Couple

Have just read Peejay's comments and would advise as follows:

Speedo mod as per Hambiltons is readable in all conditions, is dual mph/kmph - primarily mph -and only takes about 1.5 hours to fit if he does it. (You would not believe how well hidden the fixings are for the speedo cowl - would have taken me hours)

If going to Merc dealer for advice on official MB replacement, take portable defib. On my 312 the quoted price was £280 + Vat + possible 5 hours of workshop time@ GKHM per hour (God knows how much).

if it`s of any use to any of you but i have a phone number of a company in bristol that do an electrical converter for the speedo which will convert kph to mph, fitted one to a nissan last week and all you had to do was attach it to the rear of the clocks so your trip and speedo will then register in mph..
