Can any of you lovely people tell me if I can purchase a pay as you go data enabled SIM when in Spain or Portugal to insert into my unlocked USB Huawei E220 Dongle or my unlocked Vodafone Option HSDPA Mobile 3G Broadband Connect Datacard?
I keep getting conflicting advice - so decided, who better to ask than some of you who have perhaps discovered the answer for yourselves during your own travels?
So, folks I am relying on you now to give me the benefit of your wisdom?
Thanks in advance.

Have tried in Spain but they all insist that you have to buy their own branded USB modem at around 100 euros.
Haven't tried lately and things can change, so I will probably have another go when next in town.

I was told you could buy a normal PAYG Vodafone SIM and have it DATA enabled by ringing Vodafone and asking for a PAYG bolt on tariff for 30 days internet connection. I think you can purchase credit to cover 5GB or 10GB for the month.
Now how accurate this all is I really do not know but that is what someone who goes to Spain regularly told me. He does happen to speak fluent Spanish though, so that may help him to communicate with Vodafone customer care in Spain far better than those of us who cannot speak the language - so fingers crossed, he has managed to find something out that we all haven't? I do hope it is correct though as I think the roaming charges we get charged when we are travelling in and around Europe is exorbitant and I would love to find a cheaper alternative?
I eagely await further information re this matter with bated breath!

NB You will need an UNLOCKED Datacard/USB Dongle for any other SIM to function and you may also need to change the APN settings too.

My experience of using a Spanish 'Movistar' sim earlier this year can be found

. Yoigo was supposed to be cheaper, but I found the Movistar shop first. I was using an unlocked Nokia phone, but cant see why an unlocked dongle or datacard would be any different. You did have to use the Movistar software though.
When I investigated Portugal (again at the start of this year) I couldn't find any Sims that offered data access at a reasonable price. This may have changed however; the place to research is

have started adverising a data-enabled sim. As both Spain and Portugal feature at their lowest rate (€0.99/MB), this would also be worth investigating.
