I really fancy having this facility, has anyone any experience or advice.? There are OS maps available on some GPS and on the Road Angel 7000 but they are formidably expensive,,,
Will I have to wait till Christmas??

, which I really fancy a go at, although it's about 280 quid & it is only effectively an electronic OS map. Ideal for me, because I hate GPS with a vengeance - I'm purely a map chap!
But if you are after something with route planning etc on it too, then I don't think this would be suitable for you. My only issue with things like this is that it can lead the unaware into possible dangerous situations.
If you can't take a bearing off a map & follow it, but are given one of these, you can just set off into the hills with no navigation knowledge. Now added to this, if you're not capable of reading features, contours etc on an OS map, it's a bit of a recipe for the Mountain Rescue to be called.
I'm sure things like this are a fantastic bit of a kit (I want one!) but they don't make your mind up for you, you still should be in control - KNOW YOUR LIMITATIONS.
Anyway, back to topic ......
Yes you'll have to wait 'til Christmas (or the Euro Millions on Friday!)

produce the best OS maps and software. I run their software and OS Maps on my laptop and PDA and although you can use them with a GPS you do not get route directions but I see they have teamed up with Road Angel to produce turn by turn navigation but I have no experience of that.
In my eyes it is not expensive if you added what you will pay for the paper versions!

......... I have never seen one but it looks a good way to get what you want.. but note that if you want the whole of the UK OS maps they will cost a lot extra...I think it comes with just some of the National Parks.
We love to have these digital maps ...for walking, cycling and geocaching we think they can't be beaten. Before we had them we were buying the paper maps every week at about £8 a map. The digital maps are quite expensive but you could start off with a set which covered your area for £50 or your part of the country for £130... the whole of the UK is £200 ....so get writing to Santa
Yes these are the things that have whetted my appitite ( or "made my wallet twitch" as Jane says ) The maps are so expensive!! I have a large library of paper maps, some dating back to the sixties so it's difficult to make any sort of purchase on cost basis.
I might take the route of getting a lap-top and either acessing maps on-line of getting a programme to run on it. I'm not too bothered about a GPS/Satnav function as there is already one in the van.
Ho, hum
Does anyone else start to twitch when justification for a purchase looks favourable,,,, I'm like a little kid the night before Christmas

If you go down this route then do not miss out on the great advantage offered by having a hand held digital map with GPS. The main advantage is you will never ever be lost again. Before we had the PDA with GPS we walked and cycled using paper maps...great but we were always aware that we had to keep checking just where we were by dead reckoning or observed features ... then there was the time we went to walk to a waterfall in the Neath valley... we had a drink at the pub and left on the walk.... an hour or so later we were puzzled that we had not got to the waterfall... yes you guessed we were walking in exactly the wrong direction.... the next week I bought the GPS equipped PDA

P.S. another advantage of the digital maps on a PC/Laptop is that if , like us , you still like to have a "real" map to look at you can use the mapping software to select an area of the map on your PC or laptop and print out a custom map on an A4 sheet to carry with you
