hi all im still struggling to get a quick signal with my mv satelite crankup ,maybe some one could tell there format ,elevation first or direction .it can take me as much as half hour to lock in ,by that time im completly fed up with it , ive read some of you get signal in 5 minutes , maxview for dummies is what i need, regards gary

It is not that easy. My procedure is to:
(1) Look around and see if there is any agreement as to the direction and polarity of the signal. If so follow it.
(2) Try analogue first as a weaker signal will produce something. Autotune.
(3) If there is no agreement you have to try four directions and usually pick up something.
(4) swing aerial to give the best picture.
(5) autotune digital. Fine tune aerial direction using the signal strength meter.
Many camp sites seem to have poor reception and your aerial is low down hence the problem

Hi Gary
First advice, when you have got a good signal, carefully count the revolutions of the winding handle when you lower the dish again. That way you will be able to repeat the elevation setting fairly accurately - assuming the van is more or less level every time. The numbers in the little window are not very precise, as you are already aware.
I always start with elevation because that seems the easiest to me. Get it as near as you can from the chart and the (imprecise) numbers in the window and swing the dish round FROM the East toward the target zone. That way the first satellite you are likely to find is Astra2. (Edit. Just read Gaspode's advice, and I'm worried now. Is it from or toward the East?? I always go from, and it seems to work?? )
If you go well past the yellow zone and back again a couple of times without any movement on the (probably top) signal strength bar of the "finder" screen (ignore the other bar - it's irrelevant here) try raising or lowering the elevation about half a turn of the handle, and do another couple of sweeps.
If you have a Dreambox the response will be very fast. If it's a Sky box or another make it will probably not respond so quickly - and that can be a nuisance as you have to go slowly to be sure you don't sweep past a good signal without it registering.
If you get a signal on the finder bar but simply cannot lock onto it, you may well be pointing at the wrong satellite. I had that a few times at first, but soon learned to give up and try afresh. I can only comment on the Dreambox, but if you get any movement at all on the finder bar it's just a case of fine tuning and takes only a few seconds as a rule.
Hope this helps . . . . now wait for a real expert (which I am not) and with any luck Snelly will be around.
P.S. Having just read Safariboy's post I thing either he or I have misunderstood.
I'm talking about the Maxview Crankup satellite dish. Please take SB's advice if yours is not one of these.

We're in the satellite TV forum here so I assume that ozwhit is talking satellite dishes not TV aeriels.

Can I assume that you're using a Sky Digibox to align the dish? If so throw it away and get a FTA receiver with a decent signal meter on board (like the Comag 12v box sold by Maplin, Lidl, Aldi etc). Alternatively use a satellite finder to locate the satellite. If you MUST use a digibox (for movies etc.), plug it into the system in place of the FTA box/satellite finder once you're aligned to the satellite.
For alignment, use an elevation of 25deg if you're on the south coast and go down as you get further north, don't forget that van must be perfectly level for the elevation scale to have any meaning. Start with the dish facing south and move slowly east until you pick up the signal - it really is that easy.
Personally, if it took 5 minutes I would be tearing my hair out, 30 seconds should be more like the time it takes.
If you still can't manage it, attend a rally or meet where one of the "experts" is attending, they'll show you how to do it.
Check that the LNB arm drops down fully when dish is cranked up. Mine sticks sometimes if not lubricated. I can waggle it by hand thru my Heki roof.and squirt with WD40.

I can get a signal usualy within 60 seconds. Unless I have had a few too many and then it is usualy dark and I did not see the trees when we arrived on-site.
However, my advantage is a Dream/Eagle box that you can get from Shane at

.
The delay from some recievers can cause you a lot of grief. Worth the extra in my humbe opinion.

Trev.

Ozwhit, I use a small volume adjustable ear piece, start elevation at approx 25deg the swing the dish from dead east round to south usually find the signal within less than a minute, you know the signal strength purely by the high pitch in the ear piece. Try that and good luck.

I have to say we are not that happy with our maxview. We had problems with the handle falling off, no probs with a replacement handle, and Snelly was very helpful. I am sorry we bought one, as we had no end of trouble when we were in France finding the signal, andf we take our satellite reciever with us.
