There is also the online option, eg Picasa web albums, Flickr
or Photobox or http://www.smugmug.com/ among others.
Agree with this, However can you imagine having all your eggs in one basket - 600GB of photos on Flickr. What happens if they sell / go bust / increase charges hugely? 600Gb is a lot of downloading, and thats my library size after a year
Absolutely, I'd never keep the only copy of important photos online. Apart from anything else some (eg picasa) only upload a reduced size so you still need to keep the original. But things like CDs and DVDs have a limited shelf life so it is an issue.
Which is just as well as I'm employed by my company to address this very issue
Backing up to CD/DVD is perhaps reasonable but in my opinion risky. The shelf life 'common or garden' of CD/DVDs is limited and most people never check on a regular basis to see if there CD/DVD is still alive. You can of course by Archival quality DVDs which are supposedly guaranteed for some huge figure - maybe 100-300years but also depend upon storage conditions.
In my opinion the use of external hard drives provides a better solution. These can be checked easily for integrity on a regular basis and are a far more cost effective backup solution.
For presentation of images I print the really good ones but in general shots I make slide shows for playback on TV. For this I use a program called Proshow Gold which is inexpensive and has a good feature set. It's learning curve is fairly shallow as well. You can try the program for 15 days by downloading from here.
BTW: don't forget that your images are not the only things that may need backing up from your computer. Again, external hard drives provide a good solution.
I use Picasa for storing and viewing photos on my laptop. I keep them in a separate folder for each site I've stayed on. Every so often I copy the latest batch onto a CD and post it to my brother who stores them for me. I have to use CDs as my laptop doesn't write DVDs, although it can read them. I was also using Picasa to create web pages that I upload to my own web space, but haven't done this for some time. Unfortunately I can only do this with reduced size photos due to my slow connection.
Thanks for all your input, really helpfull, I will be looking at external hard drives of some sort to store my pics on (didn't know CD/DVD had a shelf life)
I have now managed to re insert my pics into my movie maker project and saved it and have now succesfully burned a DVD to show around.
That Simply DV forum is a mine of info (a bit like this one really) so I will be looking for new software to edit and burn my movie images as well.
Thanks Guys (and Gals)

I use two external 750GB hard drives with identical information connected to the iMac and two identical external hard drives on my laptop.
This seems the only way to be sure you are going to keep everything safe.
As to creating a DVD, I used to use Pinnacle software on the pc but got fed up with it taking so long, crashing and some DVD's not working on peoples players that I gave up. I now use the free with iMac, iPhoto, iDVD, iMovie and Garage Band to create DVD's with ease.
Where it used to take me all weekend with Pinnacle creating a DVD with video, photos, overlaid music, sub titles and introductory titles, it now takes me a couple of hours using the iMac. It was the reason I decided with the help of others on MHF to buy the iMac 24. A superb piece of kit and if you enjoy doing this sort of thing then nothing can beat it.
Oh and I also have a 1 TB NAS drive (network drive) which does not need a computer to run. I put movies on here and could put my photos and music collection. The network is then connected to a PS3 in the living room. I am then able to select a photo album. For example the photos I took at the Global Rally and overlay with a music album. The photos then fade in and out with the music.
A superb way of using a PS3 which my Son reminded me yesterday we have not used it for games for about 6 months!
