Hi, has anyone had any problems connecting a laptop tp the internet via wifi when using windows vista.
Had to buy a new laptop (long story see another thread) came loaded with vista. Brought a vista compatable wireless router for use at the office, no problem setting up wireless there works great. At home, we have an earlier version of the same brand(netgear) set up which is wired into the PC as it is not wireless enabled. Rich is able to use his laptop (XP)wireless from day one of this set up. We try the new laptop, no problem finding wireless , but will not connect , have run the set up as per cd . Passphrase is the same . Could it be the earlier version of the router is not compatable with vista, if so is it possible to up grade with a download ?

Interesting, we were sent a new wireless router, was able to connect new laptop with Vista but could not connect any of the other computers which are not Vista - they could detect but not connect. This includes a new I-phone which normally connects to anything going.

When we contacted supplier (via India for helpline) operator there said "Oh you can only connect one pc I think" "That's why our installation offer is only for one wireless and one hard wired one"

We have gone back to our old (reliable) router with three computers plus I-phone connected without any difficulty, and no hard wiring.

I take it you know the relevant passwords? if you do your router might not be set to access from other computers apart from the original, now heres a tech answer, hope you ready? if you look on the back of the Netgear there will be a web address printed on a label, this allows you to edit the settings in the router, you will need to access this web address from the computer that works and look at the settings, (type the address in the browser) you are looking for (allow access from other computers) check this and other connection values, it is self explanatory, there is a help bar on the right which explains what every setting does, it might take some time, hope this helps!!!

Hi lindyloot
It sound very much like you haven't registered you new MAC address with the router.
If your study the DCCP in you router setup take a note of the working MAC address's and see if that compares with the MAC permissions in the wireless setup. If not that may be the reason.
Sorry if it sounds to tech
Sad Sad

There is a "bug" in vista (or actually MS changed how DHCP worked) - which took me ages to solve a year or so ago. Embarassed

The symptoms are where you CAN connect to the WiFi - and let the network icon in the system tray has a "warning triangle" next to it. So it may look like it is not connected whereas it actually is but can't use it.

If this sounds like your symptoms let me know
