Note to Mods:
I may be in totally wrong area here - please feel free to boot me into 'Off Topic' or wherever I should be Laughing

Time has come for a new TV for home use (hence not sure if in right place) plus an update of Sky stuff we have.

This is our present arrangement:
Panasonic TV
Panasonic Video recorder/player
Samsung CD/DVD player
Panasonic Digital Sat Receiver (Sky Digibox)
and miles of cabling Sad

I would love to hide it all inside a cupboard out of sight but they seem hard to get hold of.....anyway we both really are useless with the video recorder and have never got to grips with it so thought the latest Sky box thingy looked like the gizmo for us.

If we get one of these Sky Boxes can we then do away with the video and record on that direct and if so what is the best way to order it. There are so many deals around I was just wondering if anyone on here had updated their equipment lately and if so could give me a few pointers.

There seems to be so much on offer I get confused with it all. The Sky shop is offering Broadband, phone and TV as a package cheaper that what I am paying just for my Sky TV package (about £43 per month).

See what I mean by confusing:-

http://www.shop4offers.co.uk/sky.htm

We only use Sky sports and have cartoons for grandkids when visiting but dont bother with movies. I'm sure we could get a better deal but am confused where to start.

Any thoughts/advice would be most welcome, ta as ever.
M.

Hi m

I am just in the process myself

I have bought an LG Scarlet 37" LCD TV which I think is excellent.

I have had a "welcome back" offer of a SKY + box and installation FOC plus a £50 M&S voucher. They are installing on Monday.

I understand this will get rid of the VCR as it is an hard disk recorder

(friends tell me that once tried, you can't live without it)

I have also bought an High Definition DVD player from Lidl for £32.99 which seem to be OK

ps i alway cancel SKY in the summer, hence the welcome back offer

hope this helps in someway

Hi mauramac,
The sky plus box will allow you to record direct on to it,its a clever bit of kit.
I'm in Ireland so can't comment on a good package for you

Maura,

Loads of explicit and implicit questions there, not sure what is the real one, and more that can be asked of you, such as why are you spending £43 per month given your stated requirements, what's wrong with the functionality your existing equipment provides, is it simply the operating manual is unclear, what is your ISP package, what is your phone package?

However, tuning into my emotional intelligence, adding a smidgen of crystal ball, then buy this:
http://mysky.sky.com/portal/site/skycom/skyproducts/getall3/co mbi3
ditching movies if you pay for them, ditching ISP if not Sky, ditch phone, and swapping variety for kids if you prefer. And buy me a drink at an MHF rally.

I am a Sky+ fan. Think about HD (I don't bother with it).

Dave

Now look here Dave Burleigh YOU are expected to know me by now and to read my mind Wink I really shouldn't have to explain every little detail....but for the sake of clarity (I'll break the habit of a lifetime) here goes......

I hate the old TV which OH bought as it is huge and ugly (not the screen just the overall size). I would be happy with something smaller (avoiding all the obvious puns here) say 28" or maybe 32" if if was a flat screen or plasma or whatever is best. I assume HD is best option to go for but am willing to hear advice for/against.

I don't really need to change phone or Broadband package I have at present - just bit confused about the SKy packages that include it, so discount that bit Rolling Eyes

Want to get rid of video player/recorder and go for Sky Box (as we are imbeciles and cant work out how to use it) and I now have at least 4 remote handsets to confuse me.

So I am looking for a new TV - possibly HD more compact size
Sky Box
Cheaper package with Sky...hopefully

Have I made it clearer or worser (I know that isn't a word)

I must owe you a 4 course meal and crate of wine by now, if I save some money on this Sky package I'll treat you....honestly, even if you do insult me on a regular basis Laughing

Hello St.A
How on earth do you manage to cancel your contract every year - I can't even get through to them to speak to an advisor. What telephone number so you use - is it a magic one Wink
I think my DVD payer is a HD one - will go and check.....hang on.......
nope it isn't but never mind, we rarely watch any DVD's anyway. Lord knows why we buy these things.

If it isn't a rude question can I ask what you pay monthly for Sky + box etc and what does it include.

Thanks for suggestions.

asabrush

Thanks I'm hoping it will restore our much needed confidence in all things technical. My grandson who is 8 yrs old despairs of us - at the moment fiddling around with 4 remote controls and still unable to play a wretched tape.

Maura,

My Sky+ box cost me £99 (decline the installation and just get it posted to you). It doesn't cost me anything per month; I subscribe to Sky Movies. Used to do Sky Sports but now boys not here as often I pulled out of that, only miss the golf on occasions and Setanda has complicated matters anyway.

If you are happy with current broadband and phone, fine. However, do so from an informed basis by calculating the marginal cost over the equivalent functionality from a Sky mix deal (as in my link, which also shows Sky+ at £99). Dunno what it takes for women to believe me, but there you go. My job isn't to understand them, merely obey.

Hi m

£18 per month - minimum package - does what we want Very Happy

try 08442 411 359

Once you have completed a 12 month initial package, you can dip in and out of contract as you wish Cool

And then you get offers - like the £50 M&S voucher - to try to get you back.

I tend to cancel in April, renew in October

OK Dave,

I do understand now about the package bit with BB and Phone and it would be cheaper I'm sure but right now I think it would complicate my life just a bit too much.

Recently signed up for another year with BT so that would involve a cancellation charge and my phone calls are on Option 3 with BT so working out reasonable.....for me.

Sky are offering the box for £75 half price but then another £10 per month rental on it which I was not sure about. How come you don't have to pay any monthly rental for the Box?

Seems I was wrong and we are paying £47 pm and have all the options/mixes some of which I could cancel. We have Movies 1 and 2 and Sky Sports 1 & 2. Hubby would like no movies and more Sports (typical). I don't watch movies so not that bothered about it, Music also could go and possible the kids mix but it does keep the little darlings quiet now and then.

I have now managed to log in to my account online but the crafty bu*gers wont let you downgrade your mix selection - you have to ring them first Twisted Evil

Will tell hubby about ordering the Box as you say and getting it posted to us for £99.

Cheers for help - I always believe absolutely everything you tell me, why you doubt it?

Must go now - will get back to this tomorrow.

Maura x

Er, because I don't want anything that costs £10 per month. I am a Sky subscriber and that's all you need to be; you used to have to subscribe to 2 premium channels OR pay £10 a month but they waived that. Perhaps you need to read the small print around the price to which you refer; it might say Multiroom, I don't know, but if so, you didn't say you wanted that.

Oh, and to pre-empt your next question should you try to commit to Sky+, I was an existing Sky subscriber and bought a Sky+ box for £99.
