Maura,
I am a Sky+ fan. Think about HD (I don't bother with it).

Right....
I am a bit more informed now than when I first posted the question (as ever...a*se about face) sorry about that Dave.

I hadn't realised we have 3 Sky box options to choose from - just assumed it was what we have or the upgrade to HD Embarassed

1.Standard Sky Box (what we have)
2.Sky+ (what Dave suggested) no rental and costs £99.
3.Sky HD box (what hubby was on about) costs £75 to upgrade + £10 pm

Hubby was after upgrade to HD Sky Box because the new TV will probably be an HD one plus I think he would have like to upgrade to all the Sports channels Evil or Very Mad

Personally I am not that bothered one way or another about HD and was just hoping to reduce the £47 per month at present paid to SKY and to get rid of overlarge TV.

Now a 'discussion' (nice word for a row) has ensued because OH says everything will be HD in future and as we need a new TV now it might as well be HD ready and so the Sky Box option should be the HD one.

So big question now is....are we going to be all forced to switch to HD in the future and is it worth doing now or waiting.

I was adamant I wouldn't buy CD's - then DVD's and now I have a huge cabinet full of them both + all the old cassettes tapes, videos and LP's going back to the 1960's.

I don't want to buy HD Sky box just for the sake of it but if we will need it in future then might as well get it out or my collection of out of date stuff will just get added to.

What a nightmare...... Sad

[quote="DABurleigh"]Maura,

My Sky+ box cost me £99 (decline the installation and just get it posted to you).

If you do this you will be very disappointed! Sky+ requires a dual LNB and dual cabling for the two inputs that give you the opportunity to record two programmes at the same time even while watching a pre-recorded programme. It's a great system and we wouldn't be without it. You can live pause, rewind and replay and skip through the adverts at 30 times speed. I upgraded to the HD box when my old one went pear shaped and that's great too but the amount of programming in HD (particularly from the BBC) is a bit disappointing so if money's an issue you might like to wait.

Good point that had slipped my mind because I already had a quad LNB.

Yes, for full Sky+ functonality you need two satellite cables into the back of the digibox, Maura.

As to HD or not, you pays your money and takes your choice, but it's not worth rowing over Smile

OK Dave,

I do understand now about the package bit with BB and Phone and it would be cheaper I'm sure but right now I think it would complicate my life just a bit too much.

Recently signed up for another year with BT so that would involve a cancellation charge and my phone calls are on Option 3 with BT so working out reasonable.....for me.

Sky are offering the box for £75 half price but then another £10 per month rental on it which I was not sure about. How come you don't have to pay any monthly rental for the Box?

Seems I was wrong and we are paying £47 pm and have all the options/mixes some of which I could cancel. We have Movies 1 and 2 and Sky Sports 1 & 2. Hubby would like no movies and more Sports (typical). I don't watch movies so not that bothered about it, Music also could go and possible the kids mix but it does keep the little darlings quiet now and then.

I have now managed to log in to my account online but the crafty bu*gers wont let you downgrade your mix selection - you have to ring them first Twisted Evil

Will tell hubby about ordering the Box as you say and getting it posted to us for £99.

Cheers for help - I always believe absolutely everything you tell me, why you doubt it?

Must go now - will get back to this tomorrow.

Maura x

Hi

Phone Sky, and tell them that you are thinking of changing over to Virgin, and how long do they need to cancel the contract, or any other excuse you can think of. This should get them to offer you a very good deal

We were with Virgin and i phoned Sky to enquire about having one of their packages. I made out that i was a little naive (not too difficult Laughing ). In the end i got £50 M&S voucher, free installation, payment for reconnecting BT line (£125) and a package that now cost me £40 less per month than the Virgin equivalent.

I know of people that regularly call Sky to cancel various parts of their package, only to be asked to reconsider. This normally ends with them getting their Sky Sports free for a few months.

Work out how much you want to pay and give them a call......they are desperate for your business

Sky +............its the future Laughing Laughing

Thanks for reminding me of that, I will give it a go and see what they offer.

Tch Tch Rolling Eyes

Heaven help me from a marriage with no rows - how boring and I don't believe they exist anyway. We always best of friends whatever and it keeps us both on our toes. Wink

Will set aside a few hours and get on the phone to see what they have to offer.

Just off to see what TV's are Full HD or not and decide if they worth paying extra for (I'm such an old sceptic) but as I understand it they have to have HD1080p....something to do with pixels and I don't really care about that either.

Thanks everyone, I've learnt a few things I never knew I needed Confused

do you get a new card with the sky+ box? and do you know if it would be possible to use this card and package in an ordinary sky box in the M/H

Hi Doug, Dave and all who offered help.
Just a quick update to let you know what happened.

Phoned Sky today and told them we wanted to cancel and they offered me a Sky+box for £49 with free installation. Being installed next Tuesday (25th Nov).
Also managed to get the monthly mixes down from £47 to £38 per month which included all sports and everything else we watch (5 mixes).

The Sky+HD box isn't available until January anyway - apparently they have run out of boxes Shocked

But if I had gone for that option it would have been £99 with free install with £30 credit back for delay. The bit I didn't like was the £10 per month extra just for the HD box so didn't bother with it.

I have 30 days grace to change or cancel the option and box comes with 12 months warranty.

If anyone needs to phone Sky then try this number 01506 831006 it went through straight away although they do put you on hold for a while to connect to cancellations. All my land line numbers are included in my BT bill so I don't use any 0870 numbers unless no other option at all.

Thanks everyone Very Happy

We have just cancelled my SKY subscription as we are going away for three months. On our return we will try the new Freeview Plus box which apparently does everything the SKY + box does but without a monthly subscription. The box costs about £150 which is £50 more than SKY but you will gain after 3 months without paying a subscription.
The programmes on Freeview are quite adequate for us and we hardly ever watched a SKY programme as there are too many adverts, that's where the record facility comes in as you can virtually cut out the adverts by watching the programme on the delay setting. Excellent and also available on the Freeview box..
