Be aware that Sky does monitor your viewing, and if you get Sky plus, and disconnect it from you phoneline, a message comes onscreen, saying service not availabel,
Can I ask where you go that infomation from?
I have owned Sky+ for 3+ years without it being connected to my phone line and this message only appears when you have totally powered the box down and re powered. (in fact it says something along the line of No telephone detected please check I can verify this if you need me to)
You simply press 'back up' and the message goes away and you do not see it again. Its obviously part of the boxes start up test sequence, but is not part of the start up when the box is in standby.
I rang them to enquire last week, and they said i must be connected to a telephone line for the first 12 months, and if i am not a notice will appear on screen to ask me to plug the telephone line in. That is why i am so ,reluctant to change to sky plus. I t works perfectly as it is in uk and France taking the old box. I am wary of changing in case i cannot receive the sports channels while abroad, not for my sake u understand, but him indoors likes to follow the T de F. Would you take your sky+ in your M/H to France? So please verify for me before i take the plunge

With a standard SKY box, once the initial 12mnths is up there is no obligation to keep it connected to a phone line.
If you have a 2nd box at a discounted rate (£10/mnth), there is a requirement to have both boxes plugged into the same phone line - stops you giving the 2nd box to a mate !.
However, I find that so long as both boxes are plugged into a phone line once every 3 mnths or so, it keeps the snotty letters at bay !
So if the last post is correct, it would seem sensible to get sky+ when i return from France in August, then as i do not go again until the following June, my 12 months would nearly be up, it does seem complicated with sky, you would think as long as you pay your subs, it would not matter a dam, i have been a sky customer for about 15 years, think of the money they have had out of me, and all they are bothered about is that you are connected to a phone line, very sad don't u think?
Yes, I would not hesitate to take my Sky + box abroad although I will add that as yet I have never taken it from my home.
I have never had my box connected to the phone line. When it was installed the guy plugged it in to the line and as he closed my front door the cable was removed and thrown in the box in the loft.
I would also add that my parents live in Spain and there friends have sky_+ installed and working A OK there. No BT line in sight!
Aberdeen Angus, Have Sky sent you letters through the post then? I have never seen any correspondence from them regarding this?
As I understand it the telephone line has to be connected for the life of the 12 month contract if the box is supplied free as part of the package, and you sign to agree that you will comply, when they install the system. After the initial 12 month contract expires the box is yours and you can do as you like.
I bought a thompson HD box off the internet and my late wife opened a Sky + family package with Sky sports.
When she died I cancelled the account and thought no more of it.
A week later a man from Sky called to take my HD box away, so I politely pointed out that the box belonged to me and that they did not install it.
He sat in his van talking on the phone for about an hour and then knocked on my door again and said that even though Sky had no record of them installing the system he still had to take the box.
Finally after some more polite discussion he said, that if I signed his hand held computer thing to say he had taken the box, then Sky would leave me alone, so I did.
The outcome is that though they cut off the HD and Sky + they didn't cut off the Family package or Sky Sports, so for the last year I have had these services and I don't have an account with them.
The HD box is now bolted in the wardrobe running through in inverter and I enjoy Sky Sports for free.
Please don't tell anyone though as it is a secret and no one else must know
