I have been toying with the idea of getting a new camcorder and came across this model. Its not something I would use a lot and don't intend to spend a lot of money on, but HD at this price?

Other HD models are nearer the £400 mark, so whats missing - apart from the loss of optical zoom?

Whilst I don't expect a lot at this price, does anyone have any experience of using/owning one?

I understand your dilema - I have ben through the same - finished up getting the panasonic SD9 (now replaced by SD100) Full HD i.e 1920x1080!!! Most cheaper camcorders do not go to full HD usually interaced not progressive

As Richard says, it will probably be interlaced rather than full HD, no optical zoom (a big loss in my view) and no Hard Disk - just memory cards (although you can get huge ones of these nowadays so less of an issue).

Still looks a good deal at just over £100 as an intro to video, but for a serious bit of home HD kit try: Sony HD cam or similar. Pricey but semi-pro standard.

I too will be looking to upgrade my trusty Sony dv camcorder.(got to save for it) but to be honest the Toshiba will be very poor quality. If you wait say untill the new year , they will be trying to give them away, try this mag which I picked up in the uk last week, "Camcorder buyer" good buy is the Samsung vp-hmx10. its sd/sdmc/mmc cards. 309£ But nothing beats Mini dv tape for picture Quality and for making yor own movies, great fun! lots dont have Viewfinders, and too many storage options. hope it helps ! one last thing dont buy one that looks like you might be holding a Gun?

Thanks for the replies.

To be honest, I am only considering one because we are going on a Caribbean cruise on the QM2 in December and thought it would be good to have some video of the holiday. I don't want anything big as I will also be carrying a digital SLR.

I did start with this and may continue to do so

Geoff:

Generally I travel with a Digital SLR, 2 x zooms, selection of memory cards, a monopod and a basic Hard Disc camcorder (this one Panasonic Camcorder). Off on a cruise next year ourselves and this is the set-up I plan to have with me.

Are you sure it's not a camera with a Hard Drive (HD) rather than a High Definition capable camera which is more expensive? My High Definition camera is a panasonic SD5. It is an excellent camera but very difficult to edit if you are into video editing. It requires a super fast processor in the computer and stacks of memory.
