Yes, I thought that would make you look...........

Dawn is very keen to take better photos. She has a better eye than I have (not too hard) but has a job getting to grip with the practical side of the technical bits. You can read any number of manuals to try and ease the frustration (and we need a better camera - Nikon D40 at the mo, which is adequate) but actually learning from experience of which bit to fiddle with and when to fiddle with it is very difficult. We simply point and shoot

We just came back from a holiday in california with a load of almost good snaps - we want photos......

Are there any photographic rallies/informal meets planned in the near future? It would combine two interests and just comparing notes would really help

Thanks in advance - please keep the replies clean and preferably on topic, though I planted enough things above for some to have fun at my expense (OK as long as it's funny)

best regards
David

Check your local council/community there are usually some very good courses available.
It's a much better method than books etc.

Hi David

We have held a couple of very succesful ones in the past and yes we will be running ones next year, when the weather picks up.

What is she struggling with?

Me - mainly!!

I think a better understanding of the technical side of shutter speed vs depth of field etc., how to take a decent long lens shot, plus basically how to really make use of camera features. Reading the manual goes into way too much detail and even for a tecchie can be difficult to relate to the real world. It is real world advice we need. Have looked at local courses but they really don't ring the bell.

She's quite good at judging light and also composing (but spends too long when snapping wildlife, which tends to move away!)

I'm quite happy to splash out for a better camera (the D40 is blagged on loan but a decent enough start) as long as it's a Nikon (have a whole series of them)

I knew that such meets were arranged sometimes and provided that it isn't a weekend when I'm competing in my boat, would be a good way to spend a few days.

Thanks and best regards

Hi

Talkphotography is a very good forum and I spend a lot of time on it. Of course there is nothing to beat hands on, face to face so to speak which is why meets/courses cannot be beaten, and never will by the internet.

You mention wildlife. Does she try to photograph what is happening or tries to anticpate what is about to happen

I don't know how far away you are from South Somerset, but Dillington House regularly runs a day course called, "Digital Photography - understanding your camera". Usually on a Saturday. Good excuse for a weekend away in the MH?
