If that’s the case why not just stick with the donations
I see the difference being more obvious in the future than it is now. If Nukes ultimately gets 5 or 10% of sites Europe wide and discounts of gear we need then why should these facilities be advantaged by someone who just pops in once. Work has to be done to get all this organised and loads of time spent so a subscription would be more like a membership ( a word I prefer) and a member would be able to take up these opportunities and others as I understand it and reap the rewards of being a member. I would prefer and this is not Nukes theme, for subscription payers to be full members of the club so to speak and as such have a greater input into the sites makeup, have discounts on gear and discounts on sites etc. Those that do not wish to pay presumably would not require discounts on sites and gear and probably their interest in how this site will be run in the future is mimimal.
There are so many things we could do if people chip in even a little- we could run a raffle to raise money, perhaps even have a lottery syndicate, add a readers wives section... the list is endless.
In summary, a subsciber member in effect is paying for the priveledge of specail offers and discounts, has a significant input into the sites ambitions, etc.
These are more my intrepretations of what I hope is planned and may be contrary to Nukes and others ideas.

If subscription then Dave will have some idea of when 'lumps' of money are coming in to do what has to be done.
Get rid of the crowns Dave, but keep the value added, then everyone is happy, the subscribers get something for their money, those that choose not to ,don't feel stigmatised.
Then everyone will be happy and we can get on with the job
Please
[I]Sorry ,Pusser got between my answer to Merlins question, so I make less sense than normal

If there is a subscripion and a donation option, the people may opt for a subscription - and pay once a year rather than making a number od donations.
May I suggest that rather than a subscription that only donations are accepted, but when a persons total donations have reached a certain amount e.g. £15 (as in the subs), then they are granted a membership for a year starting from when they reach or exceed the set point.
That way, more people may be willing to donate a minimum of the amount set as a trigger point - and possibly donate a little more later on in the year.

I told myself I wasn't going to post anymore to this thread, having already said my bit. But with the question of donations, Dave has previously said he needs £15,000. Look at the donations for May 2005. Although £150 over target, they are still at £300 approx. x 12 months if they stay at that level = £3600
This is less that 25% of the required level. The only way to get regular funding at the required level is to attract a membership.
Do this by offering incentives to join, and not reasons not to.
Dont change anything on the site (as this is attracting new interest the way it is)
just have a box to click on if you want to join.
The incentives could be:- a cheaper site fee at rallies, retail discounts, site fee discounts, the list is endless and I'm sure you good people out there will come up with some extra special ideas to benefit the members.
There should be no visible 2 tier system, (a good move to remove the crowns)
It dosn't matter that you choose not to be a member, just so long as the site eventually gets the required number of paying members in order that this (much loved) site, continues to give you the users pleasure, a shoulder to cry on, a helping hand or a sense of belonging.
Whatever your reason for being here, let common sense prevail and long may MHF reign supreme.

i used to spend hours on another non mh related forum , it was free for about 2 yrs then a charge was applied and folks left in droves as more and more areas of the site became restricted , shame as it was a quality site , so im a bit worried
im a lot happier donating insignificant amounts when it suits me and i feel better about it as its when i want to do it .
cheers

I take your point, but Dave's said he's not going to do this and I believe him. If all the areas we have NOW remain free, I don't see where there's a problem in adding stuff "for subscribers only" at a later date. The thing is, when sites become large their cost goes up (relating to bandwidth, space etc) - one person can't be expected to bear this cost and "donations accepted" isn't going to make much impression on a bank manager
must admit, if anything's going to make me give up and go away it's this thread and here I am adding to it
