We have a tag-axle and we level it by reversing onto chocks. When the rear-most wheel goes onto the chock the other rear one just kind of drops. This is okay for a few days but I don't think you're supposed to leave it like that too long.

Hi - We have a chieftain tag axle. To level it i always try to get the rear axles on the highest part of the pitch then drive up the levelling ramps to get the front to the same height. i have 2 sets of ramps and have found that i do use both at times - maybe its because of the length of the van that it seems to slope more ? If the pitch slopes the other way the previous post would seem to be the best way - but leaving one of the axles hanging in mid air for any length of time will do it no good !

So, it would appear, try not to raise rear Axles but drive in/out so that you do the leveling on the front axle.
However, I can understand the concern about leaving one of the rear axles hanging and therefore I guess one option would be to try and get, if such a thing exists, a "shallow" jack so that the hanging axle can be jacked up taking the strain off axle???
I suppose this is where Air Ride suspension would come in handy

Glad hugh asked this question on leveling a tag axel burstner as this would have been one of my questions. This is a wonderful site to get problems sorted by its members. Just hope all goes well when we come up to Peterborough for the first time in our van.

So that's how you level a tag axle and that's how you do a "quote"
Thank you

I have an Cheyenne 840 tag axle and did have the same problem. I made two low profile ramps for each side the length of both rear wheels out of timber these slide one on top of the other. This raises both tag axle wheels on the rear. However I only use them if I really have to. Do not let one axle hang, it puts a lot of strain on the rubber in the alko axle tube. With reference to air rides these will not fit onto an Alko chassis. Hope this helps

Do al-ko have rubber or torsion bar suspension? Never worked on al-ko but generally with torsion bar suspension if it can take 1 ton in one direction it can take it in the other, so brakes pipes ect. permitting its ok. to lift off the ground.
When we where in france last year we saw a european with jacks, first i have ever seen, I believe it was a hymer, unlike ARV's they used a double acting cylinder. Possibly a retro-fit option to consider.
