After years without Sky tv but with a dish I decided to get a sat box because the Gaelic programme Alba is only on sat. I connected my box and got no signal. I decided to buy a new LNB which I purchased today. It has no instructions but on the back is a small switch and with numbers 1 to 5o 5. Anybody any idea what they represent, I hope to try and connect tomorrow!
How many outputs has the lnb,? A simple LNB will have 1 output only and should have at least a db02-3 for best results. cost about 20£ . have not come across this type before, why not ask the dealer you got it off. try a setting of 02, set the lnb at about 20-to-the hour or less for uk, and centre in its clamp. Any sat receiver will get sat tv, sky are only a contractor on the satelite.
Thanks for the reply. It is a single LNB. Bought from Srewfix £15. No instructions or details of db. Not sure what you mean by set it at 20 to the hour! It slots into the arm of the dish.
I've never seen 0one with a switch on it but it sounds as if your adjustment is for the skew angle (rotational angle of the LNB relative to the dish).
Just fit the LNB, align the dish (if required) then bring up the signal strength meter on your receiver. Adjust the LNB for numbers 2 to 5 until you get the best reading on the signal quality meter.

I have fitted the lnb and still do not get any signal shown on the receiver. I fitted a new aerial box just in case but still nothing . Any suggestions or should I be going for professional help!!
Is it a sky box your using.
if so get the remote and press services. Then press system set up. then press signal test.
you will be faced with 2 bars the top one is signal strength. the bottom one will be signal quality. if you have at leat 50%on both then you should be ok so theres a problem elsewhere.
If you got nothing on either then theres a connection problem on the down coax between lnb and receiever.
if you got some strenth but no quality then the dish isnt pointing in the right place so you will have to point it to roughly 148 deg and then kepe making small adjustments waiting 30 secs between each till you get quality reading and strenth reading.
I hope this helps
PM me if you need more advice but please give details of your set up

I think you'd better tell us the whole tale right from the beginning, the mention of "a new aerial box" is ominous, what on earth is an aeriel box - and what has it got to do with a satellite system?????
It's also very rare for an LNB to fail so how did you diagnose that it was the LNB causing the problem?
Have you ever received a signal via the dish?
Have you ever tried to align the dish?
What sort of receiver do you have?
How have you connected it to the dish and TV?
If you can answer these questions it may help us diagnose your problem.

I did receive sky via the existing dish, it was I think a Pace box. A number of years ago probably 4 I decided not to continue with Sky and got rid of the box but retained the dish on the wall which comes into the house via the co-axial cable to a box which I described as an aerial box. A few days ago I got a second hand sky box again Pace system I did as described went into the signal test which was blank. I assumed perhaps wrongly that given the time lapse the only problem must be the LNB hence I purchased one from screwfix.I attached it to the dish and on checking the signal strength was again zero. I decided to change the box where the coaxial comes into the room just in case. Again no signal. Hope that describes the situation.rq=left]
The aeriel box you refer to is presumably a wall mounted outlet point.
First thing is dish alignment, but if you have used the dish previously and you're certain it hasn't been disturbed we could probably rule that out.
Next thing is the coaxial between the dish and receiver. This carries an 18v potential (in addition to the RF signal) which switches the LNB polarity and it's very easy to get a short circuit or an open circuit in the wiring, usually from single strands of the screening touching the inner core at joints. Check every joint very carefully for short circuits and breaks, preferably using a meter.
If that comes up with a blank I think you're down to checking your receiver on another dish (has a neighbour got sky?) or trying a known working receiver on your dish to find out where the problem is.
