Just to add another mention, only relevant if you are a Nikon user - I have elements and CS3 but am getting hooked on Capture NX2 for all but the really creative stuff, as it is much, much quicker and with many advantages for a a Nikon user.

Hi again, Ruth I only have a Fuji S5500 (at the moment) nice little camera though, lots of control for a beginner. Have spent fortune on Canon 35mm, in the past, all somewhat redundant now, so I am waiting to upgrade in the future.
Brian, looks like I am getting a copy of PS, very kindly donated by Hilldweller,so I will be getting started very soon, I will let you know how I get on.

photoshop elements 6 is a super software package without the price...
if you have any children in full time education, they can buy CS3 or CS4 at a fraction of the "adult" cost, & I'm sure they might occasionally allow you to use it. I am using CS3 for a year, almost daily & I probably know less than 10% of it. Good Luck!
I went down this path a few months ago and not having used any graphics packages before didn't have any loyalty or preferences.
After much research and having played with a number of trial versions of software I settled on Gimp ( http://www.gimp.net ) This is the opensource competitor to PhotoShop.
If you are in a business environment and need CMYK handling then the only option really open is Photoshop. If you don't need CMYK handling and its just for personal use then Gimp has all the features that PhotoShop does. Gimp is OpenSource and Totally free.
I find it a little confusing but I also found PaintShop Pro a problem. However as Gimp is opensource there are loads and loads of tutorials and assistance on the net for it.
