Hi AlexJ

all major towns and cities have an ITV center nearby, usually on the industrial estates. Often no appointment is needed, but better to call in before and perhaps book a time/date. Explain that you are "touring/holiday/whatever" and you should have no problem. Very much doubt is weight will come into it............Mhome and all that.........I had my one tested, and its HEAVY, last week and they never asked (and I live here!).

Keep in mind that whilst a UK test/mot is OK for Spain a Spanish ITV is not OK for UK reg vehicles.

This is kind of on a related topic.

we are planning to full time in Europe and I spoke to the DVLA this week re taxing and MOting the van while abroad. dont want to give a class in egg sucking so wont go into the reply but i was left a little confused Rolling Eyes (doesnt take much!) Matey at DVLA explained if we are away +1yr we should register in the country we have exported the vehicle to, we are planning to come back and dont want to register the van in a country we arent going to remain in (he seemed quite happy with that). The MOT as i understand it must be taken as soon as we return which is fair enough and we would want to keep the van safe anyway. but I'm still scratcjing my head at the insurance implications.
Please forgive me as this is all pretty new but doesnt a vehicle have to be taxed and MOT'd to be insured? i was under the impression that failure to have a current MOT (and was told that the DVLA wouldnt accept other countries equiv as borne out above cheers Detourer Wink ) would invalidate the policy. is this true?

Cheers

S

Cool Hi thebishop. You are quite correct in that the DVLA will not accept another countries MOT equivalent over here. The point that was made, was that to travel in Spain the police accept an ITV as being OK. DVLA states you must MOT ASAP after arriving back in the UK. There are literally 1000's of UK registered vehicles of all kinds driving around in Spain with ITV and Spanish insurance. If you are not keeping the vehicle in Spain you are not required to register in Spain. However, the law says for a maximum of 12 months. Some have been there for 15 years or more (illegally). Someone did tell me yesterday, that if you register your vehicle in a Spain you could leave yourself open for a luxury tax, excuse my vagueness on this but does anyone know why?

I live in Spain but, because there are very few RVs for sale here, I recently bought mine in the UK and am operating it as if from the UK. So I have UK tax, insurance and MOT. I was intending to return to UK each time to renew these but would prefer not to have to!!!
As I see it, the main problem is the MOT and my insurance policy specifically requires an MOT. I admit I haven't yet tackled them on the validity of the ITV. Let the ink dry first
I know that Spanish police only require to see insurance and MOT/ITV.
Tax is a private affair between you and your local town hall.
However, there was a piece in the main English newspaper here recently saying that there is a move to make all EU MOTs interchangeable. Don't know how soon.
I did think at one time of re-registering in Spain, but two separate officials involved in this process said it is very difficult to do this with a USA RV due to problems with passing the ITV. But Detourer seems to have got over this. Apparently, the problem doesn't apply to RVs manufactured under licence in Germany! I don't have the answers!
I would appreciated being corrected on any points, and really need advice on the insurance/MOT/ITV question so as I don't have to make special trips to the UK.

Hi,

Reading through this thread some were talking about having to produce mot/itv to the police abroad, therefore I presume you carry the details with you. However in Ireland we don't have a mot system for motorhomes, only for cars (this is only in the past couple of years) so therefore the only time I need to check out that my vehicle is safe is when I want to do this for my own piece of mind. If I was stopped in G.B. or on the continent with no m.o.t. would this be a problem, however if it is I don't know how I would rectify it.

Go Neiri on Bothar leat.

Deirdre.
