Hello!
I'm wanting to move up from compact digital to something that'll give me photos of good enough quality to accompany the occasional magazine article. I almost went for an EOS but after some calming down, realise that a 'bridge' camera may be the ticket until I can hone my minimal skills.
Does anyone have experience or knowledge of these? They seem pretty inexpensive at around £210.
Thanks,
Jacquie

Don't have the FZ28, but an earlier model, the DMC-FZ30. That 'only' had 12x optical zoom, as against the 18x for the FZ-28, but has the same resolution. It's an excellent camera which produces high quality photos and so far has produced fantastic results inside buildings (mosques, etc) where flash was either not possible (due to the height of the celing) or not permitted. It produced really sharp colours in situations where my Sony Cybershot (normally pretty good for a small camera) was completely unable to take a viable photograph.
In addition to the automatic modes it has full manual controls to allow you to try different options of shutter speed, aparture, etc, to allow you to 'hone your skills', but equally impressive has been the 'anti-shake' facility. Spec on this looks pretty good overall, so based on my experience with the FZ30 I would say it should keep you going for quite a while and is more than capable of producing photos of magazine quality.

Thanks chrisdy -
Just going through the numerous online reviews and it looks like a good bet, especially with the price coming down from over £300. Sounds like the perfect camera for my needs, especially with your thumbs-up on image quality.
I have an FZ8 which I think is an earlier version. It has 12x zoom and is 10m pixel.
I have found it excellent either in one of the Auto modes (point & shoot), or in manual mode where I can play around with the shutter speed/aperture etc. to suit the shot
Whilst the controls may not be to the liking of these with full DSLR cameras, they work for me. At £150 I thought it was good value for my needs.
If you don't need to be changing lenses for Wide Angle /Telephoto shots I think it is well worth it - and Panasonic products are (in my experience) always tops for reliability etc
Some cameras won't zoom when in Movie mode - mine included, but I have a video camera for movies so I'm not so bothered.
Best to go and trial different ones before deciding.
Mine is the even older FZ 5 which I got after a life time of decent SLRs. I have never regretted the change except the one disadvantage of 'shutter lag'
In practice only a problem when trying to take pictures of the red squirrels on the IOW!

I try and state simple facts in a nice way.
I also used to have the FZ28. Excellent camera. The only criticism in reviews was that it got a bit noisy on high ISO settings. Of course the answer to this is don't use high ISO settings . Don't need them with the built in image stabiliser anyway.
I have now upgraded to a full digital SLR which to be honest is only slightly better for over double the price. I miss the excellent tiltable screen of the Panasonic too.
I believe Fuji now do an excellent rival to the Panasonic, sorry can't remember the exact model number.

I have a fairly recent (3 months) FZ28. Now 18x optical zoom. Excellent piece of kit - well recommended. I paid somewhere in the region of £270 for it. If you are looking for absolute crispness at each end of the zoom range, so you can print out monster size prints, you need to be looking at a digital SLR, but this lens (the camera uses Leica optics) is for most purposes very much more than adequate. Very clever electronics as well.
I've gone from using SLR's, when I eventually realised I wasn't carrying a camera, because of the size and hassle factor of needing 2 or 3 lenses with me, to using small compacts, which I could take everywhere. Eventually, I yearned for my SLSR, because of its capabilities - and decided to go for a bridge camera as a compromise. And I have to say, it's not too much of a compromise - great piece of kit.
Hi I have a FZ28 which I purchased earlier this year, it is fantastic. The results rival many of the more expensive DSLR cameras about.
The instruction book is a bit like war and peace but it is worth the study.
Having said that the results on auto are very good
Yep, I bought one for my trip to Morocco and was very pleased with the results.
You can play with the settings to your hearts content, or use the auto settings which I must admit I use most of the time, with very acceptable results

Thanks very much for the great response everyone. According to reviewers, shutter lag (which was a concern) has been largely addressed with this model.
I'm finding a lot easier to part with my dosh thanks to the brilliant comments.
Cheers!
