Because of the very high prices of motorhomes does it make sense to get a decent van conversion done? Also is there a big saving to be had?
I was considering buying a marc - sprinter lwb and getting it converted, has anybody actually done this conversion on this vehicle? if so i would appreciate to find out info on companies etc.
When you look in the auto trader and see x reg sprinters for 6k ish make you think a conversion would be ideal for getting a newish vehicle for a reasonable price.

Self build is not always a cheap option, but it can be. What is does do is give you the option of having a van that is to your requirements and some autocad operator at the builders.
Ther are some self builders on this site who will respond to you
- there is also a site for self builders that I am loath to link on here due to their previous childish remarks about this site

I am a selfbuilder in that I did exactly what it says on the tin. I built it myself. She is not as well finished as some I have seen but then I'm still working on her and improve something every year.
buying a van and then getting it converted is probably as expensive as buying one already done but dont have any facts or figures on it.
The one thing is that you would get one built to your specs, or would you.
They would probably offer to design it for you and you end up with just what they did for the others.
we spent a summer touring in ours with a couple of mattresses and a campstove, loo in the corner and a plastic bowl. The main piece of kit was the notebook which detailed daily notes of what and why and where.
this gave us the working design for the van and we can now spend 6 weeks in her without falling over each other [2 adults and an 11 yr old]
total cost including van [excluding repairs to van] is just less than £400.
and i'm no carpenter. had no proper tools and can't work for more than a couple of hours before pain takes over.

Cheers for that i am currently mulling it over on what to do i quiet frankly have concidered just about everything from buying a hymer from germany to just a basic van and getting a conversion done on it.
The thing is i dont really think i want a massive motorhome ( although it would be more comfortable) because when im driving around a would like more of an easier drive and i do think vans compared to coach builds are.
I might even concider something else but there are alot of circumstances to take on board so yes if people out there have gone down a similer route to what im thinking then please let me know - cheers for the replys .Mark.

Several firms will do it for you - Look in the pages of MMM for addresses

Did think of DIY but wanted to be using the van instead of working building it

Just DIY'd the bathroom ( Pam wanted to swap the bath for a shower) and kitchen (sale people didnt want to sell what we wanted to buy - You wont get that anywhere - well we have)

Now were off to have a rest for a few weeks

I had a Ford Transit (1999) converted by Middlesex Motorcaravans about a years ago. It was converted to my design although I had to change two things after advice from the MM. It isn't a cheap option - it took five weeks labour and all the furniture was made specifically for my van. I can recommend Middlesex for the high quality of both their bespoke conversions and their own models. They will be at Peterborough.

In reply to how much im willing to spend, i would have thought its going to be round the 10k mark this must include buying a van ( mercedes-benz sprinter) possibly for around 5-6k then the rest on building it.

There is a firm called 'Leisuredrive' they seem to turn out a reasonable product.

I think for the T4 VW the conversion is around the £6 thousand mark.

I've just finished 'chucking out the chip' and fitting out in plywood. I reckon I've saved at least 50% on weight and have achieved a much better storage space than originally supplied.

As has been said in an earlier thread, the finish may not be up to 'factory standards' but it is 98% there.

Give it a go...you know it makes sense!

PS. You know that rule...measure twice and cut once? Well it's a load of c**p, I still ended up with a piece of wood that did not fit Embarassed
