Unfortunately, I have deleted last night's recording having seen it, so can't try it out on the laptop. I will try again later. What software would be needed to convert the files into the correct format, and where could I source it from?

Try VLC media player for playing back the files that have been recorded on the hard drive.

You will need some different software to go the other way (divx to the Technomate) etc
