3. Enjoy a glass or 2 whilst staring balefully at the heap of cables and expensive boxes scattered on the floor.
4. Decide to disconnect everything and start again, 1 step at a time.
5. HEC to TV via HDMI to get HD pictures assuming you've a DVD drive in the HEC -- and to get the Viera link function.
6. Phono output on TV to HEC phono input to get TV sound through HEC amplifier. (called "Audio Out" on my Pana'). You'll need a twin phono to twin phono lead from one of the sheds for this. An optical lead as other posters have mentioned should do the same job.
7. Fiddle with HEC controls to route TV sound through the HEC speakers (turning down the TV sound is always a good tip here).
8. Have another glass or 2.
9. If the above works then connect Sky+ via Scart to TV. Possibly the sound will come out of the HEC as this will have gone via the TV sound channels but you may have to get a second Phono cable from the Sky box to the HEC if it has a second phono input like mine does.
10. If the above does not work, ask to borrow a nephew (must be under 15 years of age) who will do it in 10 seconds AND have the Playstation connected.
I have Sky+ to TV1 via Scart and no ghosting, what's with the RF channel?. If I want Sky then I select AV on the TV remote and so long as AV1 was selected before (the TV memorises the last AV input) then see the picture, alternatively turn on TV first (which defaults to DVB), then turn on Sky box and TV automatically switches to AV input and we see Sky.
Also have a HEC (old Pioneer) - this is connected as above and we get TV and Sky sound via the HEC speakers.
Co-ax lead to Sky box first, then Co-ax fly lead from Sky box to TV.
Dougie,
Think Shane has read it wrong. You appear to have Sky+, not SkyHD. So:
HDMI from HEC to TV
Scart from Sky+ to TV
Optical from TV to HEC to provide audio
Co-ax aerial direct to TV for Freeview.
This way the HEC gives audio for DVDs and by switching to Aux input, all audio from TV will be heard through HEC.

To get Dolby Digital sound on a Sky+ box (DD is available on all Sky Movie channels and a couple of Disney channels), or a Sky HD box (DD available from all HD channels and SD Sky Movie channels and some Disneys) you need to connect an optical cable direct from the Sky box to your amp.
Dolby Digital is not carried through SCART or HDMI, so you will not get it by taking the sound from the TV to the amp.
The latest Sky HD boxes (Pace, Samsung and Amstrad), also allow connection direct to amp via coax as well as optical.
There are two Dolby Digital streams that Sky/BBC HD/C4HD transmit depending on the programme.
DD 2.0 which is stereo and DD 5.1 which is full surround sound. Most amps will convert DD 2.0 to pro-logic which will send sound to the centre, left, right and rear speakers.
