Richard, It is a pi55ing contest between the dealers LOL Who can make the wall, wetter, higher And I must admit that I have been guilty of getting caught up in them
The bottom line is that if either were given to me as a present I would be delighted to have them.
DAB is right (as always) that the Camos will lock onto more satellites than the TrackVision from the user control panel, but that said the KVH can be changed.
Get the best deal you can, from some one that you trust not to screw up your van by a shoddy installation, and, someone who you think may be around in years to come to give you back up and service.
Re holes, the Camos operates on a single RF cable so the only hole is 8mm
Merry Christmas to everyone and I hope that anyone else that doesn't celebrate Christmas enjoys the break.
Just been talking to on of my customers that has 2 Camos in motion Domes fitted to 2 of his tour Coach's, I didn't realize he had them as it just came up in conversation today.
He said they have been on for about 4 years and haven't been any bother. These things do between 2 and 4 thousand miles a week so that must be a good recommendation to a Camos reliability.
I guess I will have a search about for the best price as I want a few other things I might get a deal on the whole lot.
The price of KVH's are about to increase on 1/1/9. The distributer has held the wolf from the door for a long time now and due to the value of the dollar against the pound and worldwide economic situation, something has had to give. It's a shame, but I believe it won't just be KVH's that go up next year.
I echo Eddie's comments. There is a lot of dealers stating their product is better, im guilty too - its hard not to blow your products trumpet when you believe in it. But I think the most important point was the one about installation, make sure you have it fitted by someone reputable and well established, a dealer that knows what they are doing!
Just a follow up on the customer of mine with the Domes on his Coach's.
I called back in there today to have a chat and it turns out he has 2 Camos domes on 2 , 2004 coachs and 2 newere coach's (2007) with KVH domes on.
He said that he has have very little bother with any of them. He did say he had to buy a new cover for one of the KVH'S and it cost over £300 after it had a fight with the top of a garage door but the dish and workings survied the garage door it hit.
So I guess both the Camos and the KVH in this case are as already said as good as each other even in use evryday for up to 1,000 miles a day.
Well, I don't have any TV system installed, but I did a bit of research on Camos vs KVH a few months back. It seems to me that there is little to choose in terms of performance. The KVH has a bigger footprint on the roof (81cm dia vs 70cm). Also, the Camos controller is pre-programmed for 7 satellites whereas the KVH is set for 2. If you only want to watch UK channels this may not be an issue, but if you want to access other 'birds' in parts of Europe where UK services are out of range, it could be.
Having said that, the KVH library has loads of satellites, but you have to plug in a laptop via a serial port in order to re-programme the 2 that are stored for user-selection. The importer told me that this is normally done by the installer, but a confident user could do it themselves as they moved around Europe.
I bought the Camos myself and fitted myself. This replaced a manual sat dish. So had a ready made hole to contend with. With the Camos I bought, (I believe it's down to one now), It had two cables. However, the hole left by the manual job was huge compared to what was now needed.
I made up plate from aluminium, fitted a grommet, passed the cables through this, then got a "Telecoms" cable entry to cover the lot. Made sure the lot was covered in sealant at every stage, to ensure no water ingress, then filled the "Telecoms" entry with expanding foam. ( this was considerably bigger than required!! but it's on the roof!!
This all worked for me and have been extremely happy with it. There is a small control box but it's in a cupboard, you select the satellite manually anyway. Have wired it out to a satellite comms connector which matches the rest of the wiring in the van. Don't have a "fitted" TV so have to connect up manually.
Only thing to be careful of is when you park up, have a look around for obstacles, trees etc which could obscure the dish view.
