Slightly off topic but it really annoys me when the designated places are used by non blue badge holders. Tesco Thurrock - you can't move sometimes for all the chavs and chavettes in their modded corsa's all parked in the disabled bays. Anyone dare to ask them to move? No, I thought not.
Some Asdas actually have a clamping/tow away policy which keeps the places clear.
My local disability group has a non-confrontational 'baywatch scheme'
They put notes on the cars with the writing "You have my parking space would you like my disability?"
I recently applied for and got a disability parking bay outside my house.
The town council clearly stated that I do not own the parking bay, and cannot legally prevent anyone with a disabilty from parking in it. But it really does get up my nose when other disabled people think it's there god given right to use the parking bay for anything up to eight hours a day while they are at work or going shopping in the town centre. It's as if they are deliberately using it to avoid parking charges in the town centre quarter of a mile away to which they CAN and do walk. Also there are those who just park over the of the boundary lines of the bay making it difficult to park up. So I now just park bumper to bumper with them to given them the hint (stuff em).
I thought the parking bay would help me, but nothing has changed I'm still strugling to park up at home having made a trip to the doctors, hospital or chemist.
I was going to keep quiet having had my say earlier on in this thread but can't stop myself - sorry!
I walk fairly well on a good day and hardly at all on a bad one. I struggle to get out of my car every day unless my door is flung wide open - only possible if parked parallel to the kerb or in a disabled bay. I need my permit!
My normal mode of transport is my own car - registered as tax exempt and used by me to get around (any one want to grumble about me scrounging? .... Good, I thought you'd all be more couteous than that!). Sometimes we travel in my husbands car, so my permit comes with me, so that's 2 cars. I have 5 children, 4 of whom drive, 3 of whom have partners who drive. At times I have travelled in all their cars. So that's 7 + 2 = 9 cars. We own a motorhome, and use that on the public road. We don't often actually park it on the disabled bay as it is too big, but sometimes use the single yellow line to park on so I don't have a long hike on a bad day. Now we're up to 10 vehicles. If I need to travel for work and the journey is more than 50 miles I am supposed to use a hire car rather than claim mileage. That can be any car from the extensive car-hire fleet. Should I register them all? No, of course not! It would be impossible.
Hopefully this explains why the system proposed above will just not work - I could go on to list friends cars etc, but I hope I have made my point!
Those with a disability should park with consideration; those without should stay out of the designated bays and get off their idle backsides! None of us with a disability has asked for or chosen to be disabled, it is just the way things work out. Please challenge those who do not look as if they have a disability and are using the spaces and spread the word that we need that bit of courtesy and consideration. I am happy to be challenged any time I put up my permit on parking - when I use my crutches my disability is more visible and more obvious, but like many others I try to minimise not maximise the effect it has on me - I'm good at leaning on my loving hubbie and using him as a prop!
To get back to the OP, I would willingly pay the £50 charge if it gets those out who had no right to park in a designated bay. It is a worthwhile investment to me.
